AKAROA WHARF.

r. McGregor,

To the Editor.

Sir, —I notice in your issue of 4th with pleasure, a letter from Mr W. H. Henning, Wharfinger, in connection with the important question of the wharf. The iinportnnce of the matter in advancing the interests of the Borough and district can hardly be over-rated, and Mr Henning's letter will have the effect of forming what is very desirable, a public opinion on the question. Mr Henning , is quite in error, however, as to the Council having finally adopted a scale of dues. No scale of dues has as yet been adopted. A crude and ill-digested report from the wharf committee was brought up at the last meeting of the Council, and on the ground that the committee were not in a position to say what the effect of the reduction would be, I opposed its adoption. In the then temper of the Council, I found that it would be impossible to carry my resolution of re considering the whole question, and so agreed to postpone the matter tili next meeting. Before that time an effort should be made to educate the Council on the subject, either by petition or public meeting. In the event of their still being unreasonable their whole action could no doubt be upset, as the confirmation of any scale of dues hy the Governor would be ultra vires, while "The Akaroa Wharf Ordinance " is unrepealed. —Yours, etc., j

A. I. McGREQOJR,
