AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.
A meeting of this Road Board was held on Saturday last. Present —Messrs Chappoll (chairman) McDonald, Checkley and Shadbolt. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. INTERVIEWS. Mr C. Bates waited on the Board re the road to his property at French Farm. The Board asked if he would contribute a third of the cost. Fie asked what the cost would be, as he was not in a position tr> pay a good deal. It was resolved that the C'erk visit the place and estimate the cost, and lay the result before the next meeting of the Board. OLD GERMAN BAY ROAD. Mr.lnman was in attendance, respecting this road. He stated he was willing to convey the new roid to the Board, on the Board conveying the old road to him. bell's iioad. Mr Inrnan waited on the Board re Bella ro-id. A long discussion took place regarding tlio conveyance of the road. The Board went into committee on the matter. Mr Bell was also interrogated on the question. It was eventually resolved to leave the matter over till some further information had been obtained, and it was agreed to hold a special moeting on the subject on Tueslay (thid day),
MOUNT BOESU KOAD. Mr McKay waited on the Board, saying , that he had received a letter saying, that the Board would not pay any further money for allowing persons to pass through his land There was a year's agreement witli the Board by which they undertook to pay him £1 a month. The agreement came to an end on March 19, flnd he was quite willing not to ask for any further sum after that date ; at the same time he wished distinctly to be thoroughly understood and put fairly before the public, and thought the Board had treated him ungenerously. The Board agreed to Mr McKay's offer of ceasing to charge after the 19th March, odell's road. Mr Odell waited on the Board, askirg that the Clerk might inspect and pass worn done by him on this road. The request was acceded to. GRASS SEED ON ROADS. Mr Whelch waited on the Board, asking what he was to do regarding grass seed on Harmon's road, sold to him by the Board, which Mr Latter had not allowed him to take, stating the Board had no right to it. The Board said the matter lay entirely between Mr Latter and himself. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read— From Mrs E. S. Watkina as follows :— " Akiroa, February 6. 1882. '• Gentlemen, —I beg to call your attention to the state of Harmon's track from the main road to the foot of the hill on the Little River side, this is the only entrance to my property from the Akaroa side. NV.mbers of trees have fallen across the track, logs have been cut and left on the track, and it is overgrown in a number of places, the crossing over the three or four small streams are formed into bogs, and it is not safe for man or beast to travel on. I have been at some expense keeping the track clear, but since bueh has been fallen across the track it is nlmost impassible. I request that the track be cleared nine feet wide as far as the creek at the bottom of the hill, part of it was opened out some five years ago and I have kept it open till lately. The estimated cost of this work ia Is 3d per chain. I hope you will favorably entertain this request and if possible proceed with the work while the fine weather lasts. Yours, etc.,
" Mrs E. M. Watkins." The Clerk was instructed to visit the place. A number of other formal letters were read. THE LITTLE RIVER RAILWAY. Mi Shadbolt moved—" That the Clerk be requested to write to Mr Montgomery, M.H.U., asking what had been done regarding last session's vote for\ this railway, and whether any new contract had been let, as he understood £6000 had been allofor this work, and he was afraid the vote would lapse when Parliament met."
Agreed to. MISCELLANEOUS. Mr Shadbolt called attention to the state of the bridges on the main Akaroa road, which he thought should be seen to. ' ONUKU BRIDGE. Mr Checkley naid that lie had visited the proposed site of this bridge, and found it would be far more expensive than he had first anticipated. The bridge required doing very badly. Considerable discussion ensued, and Mr Checkley eventually moved—" That tenders be called for the work." Seconded by Mr McDonald and carried. ACCOUNTS. Mr McKay (passed conditionally) £8 Is 3d, G. Kearney (work done) £19 17s 6d L. P, Johnson (work on Daly'e road) £15 15s 7d, do (for breaking metal) £13 15s, do (for culverts) £4 10s, Kedge and Iligginson (labor) £3 3s, J. Berwick (salary) £8 6a Bd, Akaroa Mail £2 Bd, L. de Vaillant (conditional) £13, S. Curragh £18 10s, M. Sullivan & Co. £31 6s, Whitcombe & Co. £1 6b, Biuce & Wight 19s 6d, Kedge and Higginson £15 11s 7d ; total £154 9a Id. The meeting then adjourned till that day four weeks.
