LICENSING COMMITTEES.
The following Committees have held their first statutory nieelings under the new Licensing Act of 1881, Mr B. T. Missen on each occasion acting as Clerk to the Committee, and Sergeant Willis attending as inspector of licensed premises under the Act :—
Ok.'ln's Bay. Tlps Committee met on March 7th, at the Library, Okain'a Bay, the members present buing Messrs F. Priest, J. E. Thacker, J. B. Barker, VVm. Moore, sen. and J. Moore. Mr Priest proposed that Mr J. B. Barker be elected chairman. This motion did not find a seconder, and so lapsed, and it was then moved by Mr W. Moore, and seconded by Mr J. Moore, that Mr J. E. Thacker should be chairman of the Committee. This was carried, though a gentleman present thought a resident in Little Akaloa would be a more suitable person, as that was the only place in the district where a licensed hou*e was situated. The Inspector's report was read on the Little Akaloa Hotel, which was generally favorable, and, on the suggestion of Mr Barker, the Committee ordered that a stock yard, sheep proof, at least a chain square, should be erected before the next meeting of the Committee by the licensee of the house. The meeting then adjourned till Wednesday, the 7th of June, at same place, at noon. Little River. This committee met at the old schoolroom, Little liiver, on Wednesday the Bth. Present—The Rev. A. P. O'Callaghan. and Messrs J. Gebbie, W. G. Joblin, and W. Bird ling, Senior. On the motion of Mr Gebbie, seconded by Mr Birdling, the Rev. A. P. O'Callaghan was elected Chairman. The Inspector's report was not satisfactory, complaints having been made in reference to Olphert's Hotel of the want of attention at the dinner table on coach days, and that there was not proper accommodation for ladies. The report also pointed out that a private door for ladies should be opened to get into the hotel, as at present they had to go through the passage where drunken men were frequently standing. The report further pointed ont that there was a want of sitting rooms in the hotel. The licensee was then called in and informed of these complaints, and asked what he proposed doing in the matter. Mr Olphert stated that he had frequently requested his landlord Mr Stanbury to grant him an extension of his lease, which expired on the Ist of August next. If he could get an extension of the lease he was quite prepared to provide the accommodation required. The Chairman then informed him that the Committee had decided that two private sitting-rooms, with a private entrance for ladies, must be built before the next meet ing of the Committee, or the license would not be continued. Regarding the house on the Hill Top, complaints were made by the Inspector of licensed premises that two roams which had required papering for some time, and which had been ordered to be completed at the last sitting of the old Bench, had not been attended to. The Inspector also reported that the sheets and bedding on the beds were soiled, on the occasion of his inspection of the house. The Chairman informed the licensee (Mr Brickland) that if any such complaint were again made, the license would never be renewed to him, and that they allowed him 14 days to paper the rooms in question, and thn Inspector would visit and report whether the work had been done. The committee then adjourned to Friday 2nd June, when they will meet at the new schoolroom, Little River. Berard. Thiw Committee .net at the County Council offices, Head of the Bay, yesterday at noon. The members present were Messrs 11. Piper, WhitliuM, Liheau and Pawson. On the motion of Mr Whitfit-ki, seconded by Mr Pawson, Mr Piper w.ir unanimously elected chairman. The Inspector's report, which was very sitisfactory, was received. The Clerk having been directed to procure five copies of the Act for the use of members of the Committee, the, meeting adjourned till Monday, June sth. at the same place at noon.
