NEW RUSH ON THE WEST COAST.
Hokitika. March 8.
Gold was struck yesterday by Keron and his party on a flat above Woodstock, on the south side of the Hokitika river, at a sinking of 50ft. The depth of the washdirt varies from three to four feet, and is estimated to yield five pennyweights to the load. Several shafts aro going down, and a good many claims have already t-een pegged out. The flat, though immediately inihe vicinity of the terrace workings close to the river, his hitherto remained untried. It is of considerable extent, and it is believed that a new lead has been found. There, was some excitement in town to-day when the news was received.
Warden Giles visited the ground, and a prospect of one dish was washed out in his presence, which gave from three to four grains of gold. Several other dishes were subsequently washed by miners, giving a similar result. A dozen business sites have been marked off already. The prospectors will commence opening out their claim to-morrow. It will take another fortnight before any approximate idea can be formed as to the extent of auriferous ground.
