Assessment Court.—The Assessment Court for the Borough will be held at the Borough Council Office, on March 7, at :ioon.

Wakanui Election , Petition.—The trial of this petition was concluded on Wednesday at The Court declared the election void, hut held that the petitioner could not claim tho seat. There will therefore have to lie a fresh election.

Licensing Committer.—The nominations for the Berard, Okain's and Little River licensing districts were held yesterday. Messrs S. Curry. J. Libcan. Jim., II Piper. W. Pawson, and W. Whitfield being the only persons nominated for Berani, were duly elected ; and there will be no contest at Okain'.-r as there also there were only live c ndi'lates, viz., Messrs J. B. Barker. Sen., W. Moore, John E. Thacker, Francis .Priest, and J. Moore. At Little River, however, more interest was shown, no iesK than seven being nominated, viz. Messrs A.T). Allan, W." Birdliug, Sen., J. Gebb c, G. W. Joblin, A. P. O'Callaghan. J. Reynold* , , anil J. Wilson. The poll Avill be held on March 6.

The Ascent ok Mount Cook.—Dγ Tlaast has received the following letter from the Rev. W. S. Green dated February IC:— "The weather has been very fine, «nd ypsterd y we had a long 'lay of fourteen hours up and down tlio glacier. None of us had ever seen such a moraine before ; it seemed as if we should never reacli tho ice. When we did, the day was far spent ; but we hud time to make a dose examination of the three aretes of Mount Cook, anri the conclusion Me came to was this : That the south arete was impracticable on account of the notch that Known in your photograph, and also for other reasons; that the eastern ar<>te is also impracticable, as it dops not go right to the top, and its only approach is constantly swept by avalanches; bo the northern arete alone remains, and we intend to try it. From our point of view we could not follow it to its base, but we must get at it by some of the glaciers between it and Mount Tasman. This, as you know, involves a long journey, so we are preparing a week's provisions, and if all goes well we shall start to-morrow with a light tent and as much provisions as we ran carry, and work up the great glacier, getting as far as possible each day. It will be very bard work, and as Mount Cook proves to be anything than a plaything for nn amateur to try his hand un, Mr Barclay has thought better to relinquish the expedition and return. Fie proposed <loing so himself, and, under the circumstances, I did not wish to encourage him to stay. I hope in about a week to be able to tell you something .satisfactory, but none of us desire to have broken necks." Mr Barclay states : "The guides have the impression thnt there is nionj morainic matter on the Tasinan glacier thfin on all tho Swiss glaciers together. Thoy consider that one of tin- I'niust Alpine scenes they have ever ai'en is up tho glacier— li,ill-way up. In ffict, nothing in Switzerland could compare with it. The guides believe that it ia the most dillicult mountain they have ever ascended."

Tea Blrsding.-Messrs Nelson Moate & Co. advertise in another column that they have appointed Mr J. A Le Clerc, of Barry's Bay.' agent for their- celebrated teas. Funeral of Mis De Malmanchk.—The funeral of this gentleman was attended by fully a hundred find iit'lv people, showing the high ei-.tiiiHtion in which hfi was heid by those willi whom he

has b en jussoeiatt-d for so many yearn. Port Liovy Liuknsinu Distkict.—Mr Ollivier, the Heturning Ollicer. announces that the school house, Governor's Bay 7> is appointed an additional place to receive nominations, and also an extra place of election. We arc glad to see that our rem-uks on the matter have been <>!: service io one portion of ibis unwieldy licensing district. Lake Hllesmrrk Rkclamatiom,—The commitl.ee appointed by the County Council have visited the lake, accompanied by Mr WatkiriP, C.E. They heard a great deal of evidence, the tendency of which was to the effect that more water came, into the lake from the sea than from the rivers. The committee will report fully at the I next meeting of the County Council.

Post Office at German Bay Side School.—lt would be a good tiling for the residents if a Post Office could be established at the German Bay Side School. People living in Long Bay or any of the adjourning localities have to send to Akaroa for all their letters which is a great inconvenience. There are a great many who would be benefited by such a step being taken, and we should think the mail carrying could be easily arranged in connection wim the Le Bon's Bay mail.

Licensing Committee.—From our adverments in another place it will bo seen that a request has been preferred to the candidates, who have been duly nominated as members of the Licensing Committee for the Borough of Akaroa, requesting them to meet the electors at the Oddfellows' Hall this evening. The request, under the circumstances, isa reasonable one as electors at present cannot tell the views the candidates take of the Act. The Rev H. Stocker, Messrs Henning, Armstrong and Westenra, have, we understand, agreed to be present. This is as it should be without perpetuating the farce of electing persons, as in other districts, whoso knowledge of, and views of carrying out the Act, are entirely unknown. The request having been got up shortly before going to press a great number of signatures that might otherwise be procured were not obtained.

Little Akai/ia School Committee.— The good folks in this bay were again assembled in the schoolroom on the evening of Monday last, to elect, as directed by advertisement from the Board of Education, a school com.nittee. ft was the largest meeting ever held in this district for a similar purpose, and considerable discussion ensued as to the chairmanship, the show of hands in behalf of both candidates for that honor being equal. It was at last agreed that a neutral party, Mr I-I. Ber.net', should take the chair, ten candidates being nominated for the seven seats. A poll took place, and although feeling ran very high, through the good offices rendered by Messrs Willis, LeCierc, and Cox, everything was conducted in good order. The result of tho voting showed that the following gentlemen were elected: —Messrs A. Waghorn, Jun., J. 13. Barker, C. Marshall, He.iry Bennett, It. G. Itix, Jonas Pawsori, and CJ. Dubbanl. At a subsequent meeting of the newly elected committee, Mr C. J. Ilubbard was elected chairman of committee for the ensuing year.
