Narrow Escape.—On Friday last Mr George Wright of Okam'? Bay had a very narrow escape from what would probably have been certain death. The day in question, as will be remembered, was remarkable for heavy north-westerly puffs, and Mr Wright, who was thrashing grass seed, had ,-laced his thrashing floor"under the lee of ■■ l**r<<e broadleaf tree for shelter, and ' had but momentnrily left the floor in th * course of his work, when the tree fell on the floor, completely covering it w'.th fragments. As it was, no damage was done except thai, some of the l.lirasjiing cloth had .to be cut oil before it could be extricated.

Okaik's Ko.u* Boaud — The first meeting of this Hoard since the election of two new members was held on Saturday, the 28th int. Present Mssrs Bennett, Barkiv, \V. Thacker, Oldridge, and J. E. Thacker. On the motion of Mr Oldridge, Mr J. E, Thacker was duly elected to the chair. Messrs Wm. Moore, and D. Wright late Chairman and Clerk, were in attendance to deliver up all books, papers, accounts, etc., held by the v, to the Chairman. Some time was taken up in discussing the procuring of a clerk, the matter being at length left in the Chairman's hands. Messrs J. E. Thacker, T. Oldridge, J. Barker, and Bennett were authorised to receive rates due to the Board pro tern, each in his own district. Some small accounts were brought before the Hoard, but wire shelved until next meeting, to be held on the last Saturday in February.

Qrain Crop of the Peninsula.— It has been the custom to speak of the Peninsula as a place where no corn was grown, but year by year more is being put in, in the fertile flats adjoining Lake Ellesmere as well as in the Ta> Tapu portion of the County, where of course a great deal of train has always been grown In tin immediate neighbor, hood of Gebbie's Valley (iOf) acres have been put into wheat, 102 into oats, 18 into barley, 55 into peas,. 23 .nto rye grass (for vseed,) and 7 into oaten hay. It is anticipated that the yield will be very good, the wheat and oats being expected to give 33 bushels per acre aud the barley 40. The peas promise ol bushels, and the rye grass 25, and the oaten hay about. 2 tons per acre. Messrs A. P. O'Callaghan, J. Gebbie, G. Edmonds, Constable, J. "Radford, Wheeler, Parkinson, and Dr Doyle are the principal growers. Next year a much larger crop will be put in, and we hope before many years are p st to see many thousand acres of the nch lake flats properly drained and a mass of waving grain.

Okain's Bay.—The annual meeting for the election of school committee for the ensuing year took place at Okain's on Monday the 23rd inst. Mr ']hacker being in the chair. 'Ihe outgoing Commit tec gave- a report of their proceedings for the past year, and stated that they were happy to be able to hand over the school and nr< mises in good working order, The balance sheet, for 1881 was then read showing a balance of £V 2 13a The Chairman said he considered the outgoing committee had done their work in a very creditable manner, and had left the new committee, whoever they might be, plain sailing, as it were, in that they 1 ad everything in good working order, and a comfortable little balance to start with. On the motion of Mr Priest, seconded by Air Ualy, it was resolved that the report and balance sheet be adopted. (Agreed to). The following gentlemen were then elected as the committee for the ensuing year :—Mes rs Thacker, Priest, A. lucre, W. Moore, li. W. Harris, James, and Robinson. Votes of thanks were passed to the outgoing committee, and the Chairmen of the meeting. At a meet.ng of the now committee held the same evening Mr Thacker was (le .ted Chairman. The minutes and accounts of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, some small accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.

Banks' Peninsula Farmers' Olub, —A meeting of the committee appointed to arrange for the proposed exhibition of cheese at the forthcoming Exhibition m Christchurch, was held on Saturday, at Brooks' I-lobel, Head of the Bay. Present—Messrs Chappell, C. McDonald, and S. Hunt It was proposed by Mr Chappell, " That a fund be raised by the Banks' Peninsula Farmers' Club to dofr y the expenses of exhibiting eheees and any other proouce members of the C ub may think fit to exhibit, and that exhibitors be ask-'d what amount of pro dive they will guarantee to exhibit at tiie karoa Exhibition, it to be optional with the judges whether any, all. or none of any exhibitors produce, be exhibited in Christchurch. Each member to state what make his '-!-c*?sc is whether 'i'Mmiop, Chedder, Milton, or cheese made by any other process 7 and that 500 posters, or more if required be printed, the same to be sent in small quantities to all Towns in New Zealand, giving information as to date of Exhibition, [dace and date, when and where to be held." veeoiided by Mr ii. Bauky's Bay School Commitxkk. — At the annual meeting there was a moderate attendance. Mr D. LeComte was vot°d to the chair. Tbe report and statement of accounts was read and adopted, and the following new committee elected, viz., Messrs R. Latter, E. S. Latter. I). heComte, J, Mundy, J. Wright, T. LeComte, aud C. Heed. At a committee meeting held subsequently, Mr D. LeComte was elected chairman.
