Christchuhch, January 16
J. A. Caygill, pm Usher of the Christchurch Telegraphy whh committed for trial to-dfiy on a charge of libel against Mr J, W. Treadweil. Bail was allowed in one surety of •iilOO. During the hearing of the case Mr Pilliett, M.H.R., declined to answer a question as to whether lie. was the correspondent for a Dunedin paper. The Bench were about to commit him for contempt, when the examining counsel waived the point.
From the opposition now shown by the public, it is unlikely the Exhibition building will be erected in Cranmer square A petition against it is being got up by the citizens.
Alexander Murray, landlord of the Crown Hotel, Lyttelton, attempted suicide to-day by cutting his arm across near the elbow with a razor. He was missing a few hours, and was found in a garret over the billiard room, lying on a stretcher unconscious. Pools of blood were on the floor. A paper was found in the garret, stating that want of money was the cause. Dr Rouse after some time brought him round sufficiently for him to be removed downstairs.
A private telegram from Timaru this afternoon says ;—Nothing has been saved yet from the City of Cashmere. The hull is very little injured, but the bulwarks are carried away. The wool and grain may be got out if the work is commenced immediately. The insurance representatives arrived from Christchnrdi by express. WRECK OF THE CITY OF CASHMERE AT TIMARU. Timaru, January 15. The ship City of Cashmere has become all but a total wreck here. Yesterday afternoon the pin of the shackle of her anchor came out, and before a second anchor was let go she luiri drifted nearly a mile into the breakers. There was not much sea running at iir.-t, and the f;!v.".in launch, Li lie Deihani, went Jo her having on board Captain Ross, of the City or Cashmere, who was ashore at the time the pin wine out. The harbor master, Captain Mills, had previo sly got on board, and evety effort was made to save the tessel, bul it being low tide she got further and further in. She struck the beach about five miles from Timaru about midnight, arid the rocket brigide succeeding in getting the crow and officers, numbering nineteen, also the harbor master and another gentleman, on shore safely in less than an hour. Captain Ross was the last inun to leave the ship, the harbor master (Caprnin Mills) seeing all on short* before lie would leave Ross. The wreck is the result solely of the pin of the shackle coming out, and in no way due to the port. The City of Cashmere was a strongly built iron vessel of tons, owned in Glasgow. She has a quantity of wool, wheat, and flour on hoard, and up to the present time this is believed to be uninjured. It is well insured.
