HEAD OF THE BAY.
This treat was held on January 2nd. The day's entertainment was commenced by the boys and playing different games of cricket, rounders, swinging, etc., in Mr Shadbolt's paddock, in which they competed with great zeal. At two o'clock the prizes were distributed by the Rev. Mr Crudon, according to the inspector's report. The rev. gentleman pveiaced the presentation of each book by saying a few suitable words of encouragement. The principal prize takers were :—Standard IV., Harriet Shadbolt; 111., Herbert Hewer; 11., William Crudon ; 1., John Hewer; Infant, F, Shadbolt. The rest of the children received a book each, though of less value.
The money obtained for the prizes amounted to three guineas, kindly given by Mr Montgomery. The funds for the treat were raised by subscription, and amounted to about £10, out of which about £3 were given aw iy for the sports. The committee are desirous to acknowledge the kindness of Mesers Kissel and Biilens, who liberally contributed in the shape of presents.
Ovor 60 children sat down at the first table, and about 40 mora waited anxiously outside, whose wants were in due time attended to. After the youngsters bad been satisfied, the older ones set to, and quickly demolished what was left, it was noticeable that the Misses Shadbolt, .Miss Pawson, Mr Pawson. Mrs Read, Miss Green, and Mr Hewer were particularly careful that none should go away unsatisfied, and the committee desire to express their sincere thanks for the pains they took. After tea all adjourned to the paddock to take part in all descriptions of 'games, tha races being tho most prominent. To the pleased surprise of all his friends, they there found Mr B. Shadbolt, who has so long been confined to his bed through a severe and dangerous illness, waiting to receive them, His anxiety to see the children enjoy themselves caused him to make the effort, and we are sure that all were greatly pleased to 6ee him out onco more. RACES. Boys "inder 10 (handicapped), three prizes—ll. Barwick 1, D. Hewer 2, 0. Hewer 3. Boys under 12 (handicaped)—F. Piper I, Henry Shadbolt 2. Boys under 14 (handicapped)—Pettigrew 1, Barwick 2. Girls under 14—Margaret Barwick 1 Fanny Sheard 2. Girls under 12—Flora Sheard 1, E. Libeau 2. Girls under 10—V. Libeau 1, Jane Pawson 2, Edith Shadbolt 3. Outsiders under 19,100 yds, two heatsWilliam Shadbolt 1, R. Williams 2. Girls' races for toys ensued, and at the conclusion the children enjoyed a good scramble for nuts and lollies. The day's amusement was brought to a close by Mr Barwick calling for three cheers each for Mr Montgomery, Mr Shadbolt, Mr and Mrs Sheard, and the ladies who presided at the tables. Three cheers were also given for the committee, who we are sure richly deserved it, as their efforts were indefatigable. The success of the treat was no doubt mainly due to the efforls of Mr Barwick.
