CATTLE DRIVING.

To the Editor.

Sir, —As we are at the beginning of a new year I would like to say a few words about the vexatious Borough By-law which precludes the passage of catlte or sheep through Akaroa at the most convenient time for driving and includes most of the daylight hours in winter. Does it not seem very selfish that an important district should be cut in two (for there is no other road), by a few tradespeople who get their living out of the settlers whose cattle they refuse to let pass through their little Borough. In country towns in England cattle throng the streets on a market day, and the people boast of it as a sign of prosperity. I say nothing about the nuisance of when a cow breaks in to your garden having to keep it there until evening: as you cannot drive it through the Borough to the pound, and to turn it on the road makes you liable to a penalty, but looking at it in a broad view I think until another road is opened the people of Akaroa should put themselves to a little inconvenience for the farmers by whom they live. Is it just that the working bees shonld be hindered from taking their honey to the hive because they may inconvenience a few drones who strole about the only entrance at their leisure. Yours, etc.,
