AKAROA ATHLETIC SPORTS.

Monday, 2nd January, 1882. Committee—Messrs Garwood, G. Armstrong, Kissel, Stocker, S. Watkins, Billens, and Meech. Judge—Mr Kissel. Starter—Rev. H. Stocker Handicappers—Messrs G. Armstrong, Stocker, and Kissel, Clerk of the Course—Mr F. Arming. The Sports were held in a paddock in Jellie etrectV kindly lent by Dr Watkins, The ground looked exceedingly gay, Mr T. Grange, of Bruce's Hotel, having the booth. Tho confectioner's stalls were occupied by Mesdanfe's Malmanche, Hahn, Turner, and Mr Alger. The sport, as a whole, was good, the high jump of sft 3ins being especially noticeable. Fully 600 people must hare visited the ground during the day. One cannot help, in recording the great success of these Sports, mentioning those to whom the success is mainly attributable. The Rev H. Stocker and Messrs Billens, S. Walkins, G. Armstrong, Kiesel, and T. Grange, jun., (Hon. Sec.) did the whole of the work, and did it exceedingly well. A word of praise is also due to Mr F. Arming, who thrashed stray dogs and gentlemen off the ground with a zeal worthy of better things. Munro also ran The start was a good one, and all kep well together till within ten yards fron the end, when Munro fell. W. Watkini and Armstrong breasted the tape together and divided the stakes. Joseph Armstrong ... 1 Walter Watkins 2 James Hewitt 3 The start was a good one. Joseph Armationg, however, soon took the lead, and though Watkine put on a spurt and. pressed him pretty hard when about 200 yards were covered, the race was never •• really in doubt, but was taken very easily. 440 yds, boys under 15. Ist 10s, 2nd ss; entrance Iβ. Wallace Crotty 1 John Glynan 2 James Daly 3 Fred Armstrong and F. Scott also ran. The etart was good. Crotty and Glynan went off with the lead, Daly running a waiting race, After the first round Scott gave in, and Daly putting on a spurt, passed Armstrong. The others were, however, too far nhead, and Crotty won as he liked, though Glynan had to hit out to secure second honours, Daly being very ** close on his heels. High Jump, open. Ist 15s, 2nd ss; entrance Is 6d. R. Birdling, sft Sin ... 1 * H. Munro, sft 2in ... 2 S. Currie also competed. This was really excellent jumping. At 4ft llin all cleared after two trials. At sft (Jurrie j was out of it, but Munro and Birdling both got over on their third trial. Munro got over sft lin at his first try, and Birdling nt his eecond. At sft 2in Munro got over at first try, and Birdling at second, At ** sft 3in Munro failed, Birdling just managing to clear at his last trial. Running Long Jump, boys under 15. Ist 7e 6(1, 2nd 5i ; entrance Is. Ernest Wutkins 14ft ... 1 Jαmeß Daly lift Gin ... 2 John Glyiiuii also jumped. Watkins and Glynan were both over ago, nnd only entered to make up. The jumping with the exception of Watkini was very poor. One Mile Handicap Race, open. Ist 60s, 2nd 208, 3rd ss; entrance ss. E. Watkins 1 Joseph Armstrong ... . 2 James Hewett 3 Time 5 minutes 30 seconds. A This-was a splendid race and created much interest. Hewitt and Watkirrs scratch, Joseph Armstrong and Lelicvre 25ydp, I Ernest Watkins and James Armstrong 90yds, were the starters. The * first round all kept their positions Hewitt gaining slightly, Earnest Watkine then look a strong lead, running well within himeelf. and W. Watkins diopped out The third round Lelievre took second " place. The fourth round was marked by a contest between Armstrong and Lelievre for second position, Armstrong eventually cutting Lelievre down. Ernest x Watkins, a lad only a little over 15 won easily with plenty in him by 50 yds, Armstrong and Hewitt, the only others in it, running hard for second place. Armstrong, however, proved himself the best stayer. 100 yds race, boys under 16. let 10s.. 2nd ss; entrance Is. James Armstrong ... 1 A. Watkins 2 W. Crotty also ran, but gave up half way. The race looked like a dead heat, but the judges declared it was won by a nose. The start was excellent. Throwing cricket ball, boys under 15. Ist cricket ball, 2nd cricket bolt; entrance 6d. John Glynan ... 54yds 6in James Daly ... 54yde 3in B. Penlington ... 53yds •" These were the only competitors , I 220 yde Hurdle Race, open. Ist 30s, 2nd >~ 10s; entrance 2s 6d. Jules Lelievre 1 „ Martin Daly 2 H. Munro 3 These were the only competitors. Munro took the lead and led over the first five hurdles, which the others knocked >down, with the exception of the first. Unfortunately he fell after clearing the fifth hurdle, and was out of it. Daly then took the lead, but Lelievre put on a tremendous spurt juat at the finish, and collared him. Great sympathy was felt with Mnnro, who thoroughly deserved the rece. 220 yds Hoop Race, boys under 12. let 58, 2nd 2s 6d ; ontrance 6d. Arthur Watkins 1 "■*"* Arthur Noonan ... ... 2 yJ. Glynan also ran. The race was a good one, and excited much merriment. 220 yds egg and spoon race. Ist 10s, «4 2nd ss; entrance Is. Walter' Watkins ... 1 Anderson, Connors, F. Hahn, M. Sullivan, H. Munro, M. Daly, O. Watkins, J. Lelievre, and J. Armstrong also started. There was plenty of fun over this event, but Watkins was the only one who carried his egg round safely, and even he dropped his egg once, but managed to pick it up flfa without breaking it. Running long jump, open. Ist 15s, 2nd W* 5s ; entrance Is 6d. A Walter Watkins ... 16ft 7in |to Munro 15ft 2in ( T J. Armstrong ... 14ft 9in* The jumping was not to be compared %ith last year's, when W. Watkins jumped 18ft 6in, and J. Clara McDonald and May Higgenw also ran. There was good couipetitio between the first two.

Half-mile Handicap, open. Ist 40s, 2nd 20s; entrance 4s. Jules Lelievre, 15 yds .. 1 Walter Watkins, scratch 2 This race was a complete fiasco. There were only these two starters, J. Hewitt and J. Armstrong being scratched. Throwing Cricket Ball, open. Ist match cricket ball, 2nd 2n 6d ; entrance Is. F. Malmanche, 80 yds ... .1 O. Watkins, 78 yds ... 2 J. Hewitt, IL Munro, and R. Ferris also competed.

Hop, Step, and Jump, open. Ist 10s, 2nd 2e 6d ; entrance Is. W. Watkins, 37ft sin ... 1 R. Birdling, 36ft Bin ... 2 Munro (36ft 6in) and O. Watkins (33ft 3in) also competed. This was not up to last year's standard, when 38ft was covered.

220 yds Three Legged Race, open. Ist 15a, 2nd 7s 6d ; entrance 2s. O. Watkins and J. Daly ... 1 J. Lelievre and J. Armstrong 2 G. Crotty and C. Bailey, and W. Watkins and 11. Munro also ran. The start was good but W. Watkins and Munro came to grief and fell soon after starting, Crotty and Bailey came in second, but were disqualified, having lost a tie. Putting the stone (lGlbs), open. Ist 10s, 2nd 2s 6d; entrance Is. W. Watkine ... 27ft 9in R. Dalglish ... 26ft sin M. Daly, H. Bailey, J. Fraser, J. Hewett, M Sullivan, Anderson, Doyle, Broderick, Connon, R. Latter, and A. I. McGregor also competed. Committee race. Ist, Piece of plate. T. Grange ... 1 H. Billens ... 2 G. Armstrong was the only other competitor. It was won easily s Race for men over 40 A. I. McGregor ... 1 W, Currie 2 J. Currie, C. Schubert, LeProu, S. Hunt, and 4 others also ran. Mr McGregor took the lead from the start and won as he liked. Mr McGregor returned his prize to the fund with his usual liberality. A number of extra events took place, amongst which the most amusing wero those for boys under 10 and for girls under 10. The former was won by a smart little fellow named W. Crotty, and in the latter Kate Mahnanche was the winner, Fanny Billens being a good second. Big fields started for these two events.
