THE NEW YEAR IN AKAROA.
On Saturday evening the celebration of ushering in 1882 was duly observed. The' drum and fife bull paraded the streets, fireworks were let o& at Messrs Chamberlain's and Rodrigues's, and thanks to the liberality of Messrs Meech and Billens, on the ground in front of the Town Hall. There was plenty of exhilira • tion, but no disturbance, and a midnight service, particulars of which will be found elsewhere, was held in St. Peter's Church. Yesterday was observed as a strict holiday, the Bank and all the leading business places being closed. A number of visitors from the bays came to Akaroa to witness the sports. Not a few of the residents were absent at the Lyttelton Regatta, and a good many people attended the children's picnic at the Head of the Bay, and the cricket match at Little River. The Akaroa Athletic sports, however, in Jollie street, were the great attraction, and of these we proceed to give
