AKAROA BOROUGH SCHOOL.

The breaking up of this school for the Christmas holidays and distribution of prizes took place on Friday last. The attendance was limited to a few members of the School Committee and parents of the children. The Chairman of the Committee, the Rev Harry Stocker, made tha presentations. He said that this year they had adopted a different system in giving plizes, Before it had been the custom to get seveial gentleman to examine the school and award prizes accordingly, but they had been guided on this occasion by the Inspector's report. Tlie basis on which the prizes were given was a general success in everything. They had not given a child a prize because he or she was good at history or geography, but they gave them to the best all round boy or girl. There were no special prizes for attendance, but the attendance had been calculated with the other things, and it was worthy of note that in nearly every case the scholars who were the best attendants took the prizes. The Chairman then distributed the prizes as follows, making a few suitable remarks on distributing them :— prize list. Standand Vl.—Gilbert Dalglisb (1), F. Sims extra prize. Standard V.—William Sims (1), William Dalgiish (2). Standard IV.—Arthur Watkins (1), Arthur Sims (2). Standard 3.—Boys, Frank Penlington (1), John Nicholls (2); girls, Louise Nicholls (1), Isabella Armstrong (2), Louis Vangioni extra prize. Standard ll.—Edith Checkley (1), Clara Diteiy (2). Standard I.—Samuel Glew, Frederick Penlington, Catherine O'Reilly. Infant Class.—Benjamin Glew, Elizabeth Wright, Harry Barry, Geo, Ward. Sewing.—lsabella Armstrong, May Higginson, Ellen Higginson. Gymnastics.—William Rodrigues (1), James Brown (2), William Hemmingway (3), Thomas Penlington (4). After three hearty cheers the school dispersed for the Christmas holidays.
