13REACH Of THE NEW LICENSING ACT.

Two persons wore brought up by the police and charged under clause 167 of the Licensing Act, 1881. with having unlawfully by the excessive drinking of liquor wasted their means and interrupted the peace and happiness of their families The cases created great interest, being as they were, the first brought under the new act. They were as tost cases,

intended to act as a warning to those who were habitual drunkards. After hearing evidence, the Bench determined in one case to give tho offender a fortnight to join the Good Templars, with a warning that if be did not the act would be put in force In the other case, that of a woman, a statement was made that she was going to leave tho town almost immediately, so it would be dismissed on condition that she dirt so. The Bench expressel their approval of the action of Sergeant Willis in bringing these cases before the Court, and hoped they would act as a warning to others. and disorderly. John Keenan was charged with being drunk and creating a disturbance in Mr Olphert's Hotel, Lake Forsyth. J. Olphert deposed that accused came to bis placo on Saturday evening, and was very drunk and noisy, intruding himself on the company, and when turned out, knocking in some boards with his foot and refusing to go away. The Bench inflicted a fine of 10b, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. civil case. Wanlle v. Nash.—Claim £1 3s 6d for crass seed bags, for part of horse and cart hire, and lb of butter. Judgment for plaintiff, with costs.
