Peninsula News.

Ball.—A ball is advertised to take place at tbe Town II dl on December 16th.

Donation.—Mr W. Chamberlain, who, it will be remembered, did not purchase a booth site from the Regatta Committee, has kindly given a guinea towards the employment of the Lyttelton Brass Band. This action is much appreciated by the committer.

Polling Day.—To-day will be a very busy and exciting one in many parts of the province, for it is the polling day for the general election in all the constituencea.

Head of the Bay Races.—There having been no nominations received for the Maiden Plate, Wainui Plate, and Publicans' Purse, pos-t entries will be taken.

New Buildings.—An advertisement appears in this issue calling attention to tha great additions Mr Vangioni has made to his store in Lavaud street. These alterations are certainly deserving of notice, as the shop is now one that would do credit to any country town, aud we sincerely hope Mr Vangioni will reap great benefit from his enterpiize. We are glad to notice also that the increase in Mr Billens business has warranted him in putting up an additional building. It is to be hoped that these things are signs of a renewed lease of prosperity for Akaro.i.

1.0.0.F.M.U.--The Oddfellows of the | Loyal Good Intent Lodge advertise a ball » to take place in the Oddfellows' Hall on the evening of Regatta day. Cheese at thn Exhibition.—Elsewhere are advertised the prizes offered by the Farmers' Club, through the Association, for the best new cheese made since August Ist.

Athletics. -At Mr Baker's ye3terdav, the Resident Magistrate challenged the Mayor to run 100 yards. We are sorry to ss>y, for the honor of our town and our Municipal Corporation, that His Worship refused the challenge !

Little River Trout.—Mr D. Grant has had splendid sport with the trout in Lilfle River dnrirg thn last three nights. Ho caught 6 on Monday, 6 ou Tuesday, and son Wednesday, and some -of the fish were very good, one being over Gibs. Land Sports Committee.—There was no meeting of this committee on Tuesday evening, owing to many being absent at the Regatta Committee. It was agreed by some members who met at Bruce's Hotel after the other meeting, that they should adjourn till Monday night next, December 12th, at 7.30 p.m., at Bruce's Hotel.

Tes Nights in a Bar Room.—Our readers are remind«d that the second performance of this drama takes place at the German Bay side school to-night. The proceeds of the entertainment are to be devoted to the childrens' sports and picnic, and the object being such a good one we hope many visitors from Akaroa will be present. As before stated the last representation was a most decided success. The Lake Forsyth Excursion.—The secretary of the Regatta Committee received a telegram from the Railway authorities yesterday, stating that an excursion train would run to Lake Forsyth on Dec. 16th, Regatta day. It is very annoying, but the committee can find no possible means of getting passengers by the train o\-er the Little River Hill, so that those visiting the Peninsula in that way will have no chance whatever of seeing the Regatta. Another year it is to be hoped something will be contrived to make it possible to reach Akaroa from Christchurch by land, as well as sea, on Regatta Day, but this season there is no chance of it.

The High School.—The Board of Governors of the Canterbury College having nominated Messrs J. Aylmer and Piper, the Akaroa High Schoel Board is now complete. It consists of Messrs W. B. Toss will, Garwood, McGregor, J. Aylmer, Piper and JacobsOn, As Mr Garwood holds the position of Mayor, and was also nominated by the North Canterbury' Board of Education, there are at present only six members, but after the 21st Mr Adams will be added to the Board in right of his office of Mayor. The members have decided to recommend the Government to call the first meeting on Monday, Dec. 19. and are resolved to endeavor to take tbe necessary steps towards the establishment of tho school at as early a date as possible.

I.O.G.T.—The Akaroa Hope Lodge held its usual weekly meeting on Wednesday evening last. There was an unusually largo attendance and great interest wa* manifested in the proceedings. S;ven candidates were introduced and initiated, and three others proposed for membership. The attendance was larger than has been known for years, and put some of the members who have stuck to their posts, in spite of lukewarmness on the part of many, quite in mind of old times. After tbe business of the evening was concluded, some excellent singing and reading was given. The W.C.T. s.dd be regretted to have to announce that Brother Wiggins was a l >out leaving them. A unanimous vote of thanks to Bro. Wiggins for his services, was passed by the Lodge, and ordered to be recorded on the minutes. Several members having promised contributions for the next meeting, the Lodge closed in due form.

Akaroa Regatta Committee. —A meeting of this committee was held on Tuesday evening last. Present—Messrs W. B. Toss will (Commodore), Stocker, Daly, Hpnning, H. Aylmer, G. Armstrong, Adams, Westenra, La Coste and Jacobson. The minutes of the prior meeting were read and confirmed. It was stated that the Penguin would be in harbor at Lyttelton on Thursday, 15th inst., the day before tbe Regatta, and those present thought she might iun a tripon that d<iy as well as on the Friday morning, Mr La Coste moved, that the Hon Secretary write to tbe agent of the U S.S. Co in Lyttelton, asking him if he can arrange to send tho Penguin on an excursion trip to Akaroa on Thursday afternoon, in addition to the Friday morning trip. It was seconded by Mr Westenra and carried. Tbe Secretary said that be had henrd there would be an excursion train to Lake Forsyth on Regatta day. The committee agreed unanimously that a letter should be written to Mr F. Back, asking him to let it be thoronghly understood that tbe excur tionists would not be able to come on to Akaroa that day, as there were no means of conveyance over the Little River Hill. It was thought absolutely necessary to do this as otherwise the public might not understand that the steamer was the only means of reaching Akaroa on the day of the Regatta. It was agreed that for the accommodation of some gentleman who proposed to pull both in the double sculling and canoe race which followed each other on the pro - gramme, that No 5, the double sculling race, should be altered to No 2, starting at 12,30 p.m., and that the dingy sculling race, now No 2 on the programme should take the place of No 5, starting at 2 p.m. It was agreed to engage tbe Lyttelton Brass Band. A long discussion took place icgarding the collection of the amounts promised, and Messrs H. Aylmer, La Coste, Henning, Adams, and Jacobson were appointed to act as collectors.
