AKAROA HARBOR BOARD.

A meeting of this Board was held on Wednesday evening. Present—Messrs Garwood, (chairman,) Gutberlet, Adams, Brown, Cullen, Bruce, and McGregor. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The following letter from Mr W. H Henning was read :— " Akaroa, Nov 26tb, 1881. 11 Sir,—l have tho honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 25th inst. informing me that the Borough Council (? Harbor Board), has granted the Akaroa Rowing Club, permission to hang a boat in the Wharf shed, subject to my approval. " Haviug considered tho matter, it appears to me inadvisable to allow the abed to be used for this purpose, seeing that the busy s«ason is fast commencing when the shed is oftentimes full to the rafters with outward cargo. It is proposed, as I understand, to suspend the boat over the rails, but this might lead to inconvenience in loading up the trucks, and thereby interfere with the speedy despatch | of steamers.

" Another, and greater, objection is that the boat would frequently be required outside working hours, necessitating the opening of the shed early in the morning, andalsointheeveningwhenlightswouldbe required. As I could not undertake to place anyone in care of the shed at these hours, tbere would be the risk of loss of goods, or removal without payment of dues, and also danger from fire. There is no responsibility attaching to the Wharfinger as to loss of goods either by theft or fire, but, of course, consignees may reasonably expect that all due care will be taken of cargo entrusted to the Board. "I have seen the officers of the Club and explained to them the above ohjection to the Club permanently using the shed, but to avoid inconvenience, and after making necessary provision for the safety of the shed, I have arranged for their having the use of it for a week from this date, by tbe expiration of which it is hoped the Club will have made arrangements for keeping the boat elsewhere. Youra, otc, " W. H. Running." DEPOSIT. His Worship said that the meeting had been specially called to consider the question of re-depositing the £400 which bad been on fixed deposit for a year on the 9th inst. He pointed out that it was better to place a portion of the money on deposit again, but £300 would be sufficient to redeposit. Last year they had made £12 by depositing the money. It was moved by Cr McGregor, seconded by Cr Adams that £300 l>e deposited for twelve months in the Bank at expiration of present term. This was Agreed to, and tbe meeting then adjourned after accounts amounting to £2 Is had been passed for payment.
