SIR GEORGE GREY,
Christohurch, November 8
A private tulegram received here states that Sir George Grey starts from Auckland for the South in a few daj's. His intention is to hold public meetings at Christchurch, Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedim and Invercargill. He will also probably address the Leeston electors after the Hon J. Hall has spoken. MB ROBERT STOUT. Mr Robert Stout, of Du-icdh, has consented to give an address in Christchuroh on the subject of a trade and labor association. THE CATHEDRAL. Yesterday and to-day the morning and evening services at the Cathedra! have been well attended. NEWS FROM THE FRONT. No news of importance down from the front; it is estimated that with late arrivals there will be nearly 1300 men under arms in Rnhotu to-morrow.

The diiughter of. Captain Fitzen, aged about seventeen yoaiv, attempted to enter a carriage of: the 8.40 train at (Javcraham tbisinirning while in motion, and iiill between the platform and rails; The train had travelled soma distance before it could be stopped, and when it was tho girl was found to have escaped without any serious injuries, the extent being a cuto:» her forehead ar.d severe bruises about the f'.ice and hands. Her escape was very remarkable, and is accounted for by the presence of mind she showed in drawing herself close iip between the platform and wheels. A family resident in one of the suburbs wasj seized with an illness last week, but were unable to ascertain the cause for some days. At length the head of the household suggested that the water was impure, and caused it to lie run off. This having been done a painter's brush, covered with paint, was discovered at the bottom of the tank. The family were being slowly poisoned by white load, owing to the painter bt:ing too lazy to remove the brush, which had accidantly been lost in painting the tank.
In Cameron's £-5250 sweep, tho first prize goes to Christehiirch, second to Invercargill, and the third to Queenstown.
