Tenders. — The Akaroa and Waiuui Road Board invite tenders for a variety of works. Address to Constituents —Mr Montgomery intends addressing the electors shortly after the writs am issued lor the general election. Aquatic.—We hear that the ownors of the Dauntless and Shoo Fly in German Bay are making active preparations for the coming regatta. Several alterations have been made in the rig of the boats and the sailing, qualities of each appear to have been much improved by the change. Candidates Addhess. —We aie glad to sen that at least one of the County Council candidal s has announced his i tention of fully explaining his views to a public; meeting before the ejection. Mr Shad bo it, who is an aspirant for tne 8.-rard seat, requnsts the ratepayer* to meet him at the Akaroa nnd Wainui Road Board office, Head of tha Bay, on Saturday Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. Head of the Bay Races.—A meeting was held at Brooke's Hotel on Wednesday night to appoint a committee for the forth coming races, to be held on Boxing Day. The Sec. was instructed to draw up.a subscription list, and write to the working committee, asking their co-oper.ition in the matter. A meeting to amm ire programme will be heid ot the s.une place on Saturday the sth inst. German Bay Side School.—A grand entertainment in aid of children's sports and >ji -nic for the German Bay Side School will be given on December 9th, hy the Banks Peninsula Am.ileur Dramatic Ciiib. The performance, consisting of an adaptation of the American drama ,l Ten Nights in a Bir-room," will be given in the schoolroom of the German BiySido Seho'il. A dance will follow the performance. Rowing Club Benefit. — The Akaroa Minstrels havo urranged an attractive and varied programme, for the benefit of tho Rowing Club. The object is to enable the elu l > to purchr.se a boat to competo at the forthcoming local regatta, and it is to be hoped that the public will support the undertaking. The entertainment will b.given in the Oddfellows' Hall on Monday nest, and judging from the character of the performance,'a. bumper may be expected.
'Narrow Escape.—On Wednesday evening Wngstafli's Hotel had a very narrow psoapo from being destroyed by Tire. Ii appears that Mr 0. Ilonning, who resides at the hotel, left his sitting-room window open whilst he went for a walk in the garden. A lighted candle was loft on the table, and the wind must have blown the curtains towards it, so that they ignited. About 9 p.m. Mr Chamberlain, who was in •.he bar, smelt lire, and going to see where it was, discovered the curtains, table cloth, and part of the carpet in Mr Henning's sitting-room in flamos. Every exertion was used, and tho fire extinguished before it had time to spread. The walls were badly scorched, and it is an extremely lucky thing that there were no woise results than those tint occurred.
The Rev Harry Stockeb.—lt is with the deepest regret that we record the fact tluit the Rev Harry Stocker is about to leave us to take charge of the parish of St. Michael's, Chriatchtirch. During his stay in Akaroa Mr Stocker has made himself ho generally respected and loved, and has taken such a deep interest in all local matters, that hid absence will be felt as a great misfortune.. The only satisfaction one can feel at his leaving u>; is, that he in goin" , to fill a larger sphere of usefulness. There is no doubt that he will be as warmly appreciated in Christchnrch as he has been in Akaroa. and Lincoln, and we are sure oi : -mo thing, and that is, that however much our renders may regret to lose him, they will join with us in wishing him health, happiness a.id prosperity in bin new career.
Elected.—Mr James Pettigrew (th-ro being no other candidate) has been duly elected'a member of tin: County Council for the Pigeon Bay Riding.
German Bay School. —A meeting o? the committee was held last night, Mr Jollie, Chairman, presiding. The Inspector's r.-port (which will be published in Tuesday's issue) was read and considered, and the usual routine business transacted. The main school which has been closed for a month, owing to the mister's illness was re-opened on Monday lanr. County Council Polling Places. —The following are the polling places at present fixed for tho enduing County Council election :—Lβ Bon's Bay—at the public schoolhouse, Le Bon's Bay, and t!:c public Library Okain's Bay. Okam's Riding—the public schoolhouse I/ttle Akuloa, and the public Library Oknin's Bay. Wainui—the public schoolhouso French IfaiMi. Mit Coop's Retirement.—lt is with re-gret-wo record that .Mr Coop has made up his mind not to peek re-election as member of the County Council for the Little River Hiding. Mr Coop hue gained much goodwill from the straight forward manner in which he has fulh'led his duty as a County Councillor, and his untiring advocacy of the extension of the railway is much to be praised. County Council Candidates. — The following are tho candidates who have announced their intention of standing for County Council seats : — Berard Riding—Messrs B. Shadbolt, Saxton, E. S. Cbappell, T. W. Masefield, and G-. Armstrong, Lo Bon's Hiding—Messrs W. Barnett and J. E. Thacker. Wainui Riding—Messrs T. S. Baker and T. Brooks. Okain's Riding—Messrs J. B. Barker, J. Boleyn and J. Hunter. Pigeon Bay Riding—Mr J. Pettigrew, (elected). We hav3 no news of any candidates for the fai Tapu, Port Victoria, Port Levy and Little River Ridings.
The General Election.—The date of the general election (says a correspondent of the Press), will not t>e definitely fixed or the wiits issued until the result of Saturday's affair is known, as should any thing serious come of that event, it might bo necessary to summon Parliament at once. Should all go well, the writs will most likely be issued nest Monday or Tuesday, (ixing tho date of election for about the 7th or Bth of December. This of course must not he taken as authorita tive. Events might involve more or less change of plans.
