THE DEPUTATION TO MR MENZIES.

To the Editor,

Sir, —Some deputations are very amusing. I notice in your issue of November Ist that one waited upon Mr Menzies, asking him to contest the seat for Akaroa in the Houpe of Representatives against Mr Montgomery. It is a pity your correspondent did not furnish you with the names of the gentlemen who formed this deputation, so aa to enable the public to estimate their value. He even left out the word influential I Poor Mr Penton has to bear the brunt, and we all know his political antagonism to Mr Montgomery, from the action he has taken in connection with two or three other gentlemen some timo ago, but one would hare thought, having the public expression of opinion frosh in his mind, of that his first attempt, it would have shown both him and the few dissatisfied spirits that they have no status in the district. Farther, it \a in my opinion an insult to the electors, when a mnn like Mr Fenton, who has no stake in the district (and I think I may safely include the rest of the deputation), take the liberty of trying to play this district ofiE to serve their own ends. I apologise to Mr Menzies if ho thinks my remarks are in any way derogatory to him, as it is not meant, and my excuse must be that although he is a large holder amongst us. we do not know him politically,—Youre etc., HENRY PIPER.
