Christchurcii, October 21

At the criminal session of the Supreme Court the jury in the case Thomas Colyer, charged with larceny as a bailee of a horse, cart, and harness, were unable to agree to n verdict. After being locked up all night they were discharged at ten o'clock this morning. At the instance of the Crown prosecutor a fresh jury were iinpannelled, who returned a verdict of guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercj'. In answer to the Judge the foreman of the jury promised to take the accused into his employ, and entered into recognizances for his good behaviour for six months. His Honor then sentenced accused to forty-eight hours' hard labor. In the case of Francis Philip O'Reilly, solicitor, charged with libelling Joseph Ivess in Asiiburton in the Guardian, Mr Geo. Harper, for the defendant, pleaded not guilty. Mr Wilding, for the prosecution, said defendant had made an ample apology, I which the prosecutor had accepted, and therefore asked leave of tho Court to withdraw the case. A jury was then iinpannelled, and, by direction of the Judge, returned a verdict of not guilty. Mis Honor sail defendant having madu an apology should bo discharged.

Tosswill members of the Akaroa High School BoardProbably the Board of Governors of the Canterbury College will also elect two members on Monday the 31st inst. Mr R. W. Djyley, Registrar of Lands and an old resident in Lyttelton died la«t night.
