AUCTIONEERS' REPORTS.
Mr A. I. McGregor reports that during the week he sold town section No. 88. in Lavaud street, next Town Hall, for the sum of £200, being at the rate of about £5 per foot frontage to the above street. There is a considerable demiuid for business sites in this neighborhood, and inquiries have recently been made for shop sites. At the Town Hall on Saturday 1 offered rural sections 4044 and 4835, with cottage nnd improvements, situated in Mill road, Akaroa. The audience was an extremely scanty one, and not a Hiiyle bid for the property could be obtained. The feeling amongst those present seemed to be an idea that the owner's reserve was beyond the value. On the afternoon of the same day I disposed of a quantity of furniture and other goods on account of various owners, at fair prices. The shipment of Hansen's cheese coloring and rennet extract was very difficult to sell in the face of the supply just landing to order of the Farmers' Club a email quantity only being sold, at an average of 40s per dozen ; the balance was withdrawn, the importer making a considerable loss at this price. Dried rennets and cheese binding were also found to be unsaleable at anything like fai. values.
Messrs 11. Mntson and Co. report on the Live Stock Market, &c, for the week ending Thursday, September 29th as follows : —Yesterday's weekly sule at Addington, contiiiry to general expectation, was again Tvoll supplied with sheep. The consignments which came to hand the previous night, and up to within nn hour or so of the commencement of the sale on Wednesday, were very small—South Canterbury being notably conspicuous by its absence of contributions; but from 9 o'clock up to the opening of the sale sheep came pouring in from all diiections, and jit the commencement of the auction there was scarcely a spare pen in the yards. The entry (is it has now been for several weeks) was to a great extent made up of merino mutton, chiefly a very indifferent class—sheep, with plenty of siz-i, but warting in condition, and really prime quality lots on Wednesday were the excepti m and not the rule. Trade generally has been somewhat slack for sotne time past, and values week by wok have been governed by a dull and downward ten ieiuy Yesterday's sale was on a par with those of late, and for anything but the choicest lines it was difficult to obtain late rates. Inferior merinos met with a particularly dragging sale, and near half the entry of this class of sheep were turned out unsold. In crossbreds, the Levels Estate, Messrs Chamberlain, A. Storey, (J. T. Dudley, John D.ivis. and P. Uriuit were some of the principal contributors, the. highest prices obtained being 11s Gd for shorn and 18s fur woolly sheep. The sale, as a whole, was devoid of spirit, and a huge number of sheep failed to find Layers. In fat lambs the supply is Hcarcely increasing, fast enough for the requirements of the trade, and as the season may nosy be considered to have fairly commenced, buyers were very keen
i" iryinjr 1o secure si pen yesterday, as high as 15a per head being paid for some of the host lots. The fat caltle sale was faily supplied with beef of varied quality some of the linos, especially those from LongHeiich, S-adown, and St. Leonard's being very good, whilst others (the bulk) wore sti.-ond-r-ite. Business transactions were anything but brisk ; still, the major part of the entry was quitted with some little difficulty at prices in accordance with l<iat week's quotations. The store cattl ■ on offer were of a very indifferent class. and whilst a few of the best lots were fairly well sold, most of the others either changed hands at very low prices, or went out unsold. The totals yarded for the day comprised 6351 sheep, 353 head of cattle and 163 pigs.
