About 11 o'clock this morning an accident happened at the Christchurch railway station, by which a man named Michael Howard, a storeman in the goods shed lost his life. Ho was engaged in shunting, and missed his footing in jumping on to the brake of a truck, the wheels of which passed over bis body, inflicting severe •ontornal and other injuries. He was a t once taken to the hospital where every, thing possible was done for him, but without avail, as the unfortunate man expired shortly beforo 2 p.m. An inquest will be held. Hawer-a, September 1. About a epiarter past two o'clock thig morning there was a very severe shock of earthquake lasting about half a minute. Nearly all the people were awakened by the violence of the shock, which was quite aa severe as tho one a few weeks back. Wellington, September 1. A smart shock of earthquake accompanied by a loud rumbling noise was felt here at 2*25 this morning the direction being northerly. The shock was also experienced at Carterton.
A young girl named Nellie Brown while romping on tho wharf fell into the sea and had a narrow escape from being drowned. She was rescued by a seaman from the English barque Waimea.
