AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.

« Saturday, July 9. A meeting of this Board was held on the above date at their office, Duvauchelle's Bay. Present—Messrs Chappell (in the •chair), Shadbolt and Williams. INTERVIEWS. Mr P. Shadbolt waited on the Board in relation to his offer to keep the old Pigeon Bay road in repair on condition of having the grass. The Board had accepted the offer, providing that he cut the grass and did not graze it. He now said that he must have the privilege of grazing. The Board could not consent to this, and Mr Shadbolt seemed to think himseli illused. The Board informed him that they could not think of allowing him to run cattle on the road, aud the latter withdrew. Mr A. F. Hawthorne attended to explain that he was under a misapprehension as to *he work to be done on the Onuku road. He now wished to withdraw his tender. The Board agreed to this course. FRENCH FARM ROAD. Mr Williams said he wished to call the attention of the Board to what had been done with regard to taking land for the purpose of this road. The Baard had taken all the necessary steps prescribed by sections 21 to 25 of the Public Works Act. No objection had been made in the time prescribed by the Act. When everything had been done, the Government had disallowed the taking of the land. He thought that the Board should write to Mr Montgomery giving him full particulars of the steps taken by the Board, and requesting him to interview tlia Mitiistor of Public Works on the subject, and endeavor to ascertain what was the reason for the refusal of tiie Government to sanction the matter. He would like it to be pointed out that any question of compensation was amply provided for by sections 33 and following onos, It was resolved that a 'etter be written to Mr Montgomery-to the effect proposed by Mr Williams. | \ CULVERT AT AKAROA. I A letter waa read from the Akaroa Borough Council, declining all responsi- i

bility as to the repairs of the cuttert near Waeckerle's Hotel, on tlie ground that it was outside their boundary. The Board was Ptill of opinion that the creek was their boundary. The Clerk was instructed to call for tenders for the work. and to inform the Borough Council that, if it were shown that the creek in "question were the boundary, the Board would expect them to pay their share of the cost. TENDERS. Ihe following tenders were opened :— FLEA BAY HOAD. „ . George Checkley (44 chains and culverts), £16 4s; .Mitchell and Curragh, (40 chains) £14 ; A. F. Hawthorne, £10 ; Peter Brown, £20. The tender of G. (Jliecldey was accepted, the Board, being of opinion that Hawthorne's conduct in throwing.up his for mer tender rendered it inexpedient to accept this one from him. ROAD MAINTENANCE. 1 James Curry, £43 ; 2 PeterShadholt, £39 : 3T. Gilroy, £79; D; Lecointc, £58 ; 9 Edward Chapman, £69 ; T. Gilroy, £58; D. Lecomte, £56. The tenders of Jainna Curry (1), Peter Shadbolt (2), D. Lecomte (3 and 9), were accepted. - . LONG BAY ROAD. H. Edmohdeon wrote to say he had.completed the work required on this road, and would be glad of the money due. The Clerk was instructed to inspect the road and report to the Board whether the work had been satisfactorily completed, and the Board adjourned.
