HORTICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Akaroa Horticultural and Industrial Exhibition committee took place in the Akaroa public schoolroom, last Tuesday evening. His Worship the Mayor occupied the chair, and tho other members present were Rev. H. Stocker, Messrs Nicholls and Perm. The Secretary and Treasurer, Mr Stephen Watkins read a statement of the accounts for the past year, which had been duly audited by Mr G. Black, from which it appeared that after paying all the liabilities in connection with the working of the Society and the paying of prizes, a sum of £7*6s Id was still on hand, to be carried to the credit of the next years account. The report further showed that the Slim of £46 19s 7d had been collected in cash and prizes had been received to the value of £24. The total expenditure had been £39 13s 6d. On the motion of the Rev, 11. Stocker, seconded by Mr Nicholls the report was considered highly satisfactory and was adopted as read. This finished the business of the. committee meeting, and a public meeting was held in the same place immediately afterwards. His Worship again took the chair, and in addition to the members of the committee aheady mentioned as present, very few of the general public put in an appearance. The Chairman regretted to-sec, so few present, but as the chief business of the meeting was the selection of a working I committee for the coining season, by electing the right sort of persons, the Society was not like/y to suffer either in its aims or objects. Rev. H. Stocker was af;aid the society sometimes attempted i too much, ar.d lost sight of its primary obj-Cis, which as he understood them were purely local. Almost every other town in Now Zealand had now Industrial Exhibitions of the same sort as that held in Akaroa, and although Akaroa was the OrY to initiate them, he warned the Society a._;.:in.t too ambitious schemes. The election of ofr.ee bearers and a committee was then proceeded with. Mr Nicholls objected lo again serve on ihe committee, and he thought schoolmasters generally would act with taat- in not serving on tho committee ;:_ they were as a rule much interested in the !!ucce;;s of exhibitors. The Chairman and iii-_;;ng concurred in Mr Nicholl's opinion. The Rev, W. J. Aylmer was relected Pr.sid.nt and His Worship the Mayor and the Rev. H. Stocker, Vice Presidents. The following gentlemen were elected to serve as a committee, Messrs Welch, Westenra, Billens, Harris, Bicknell, Perm, Wiggins, Penlington, T. Grange, Sen., and Dr Guthrie, live to form a quorum. The Chairman proposed that Mr S. Watkins be relected Secretary and Treasurer, and in doing so paid a high tribute to tho energy and good will, which that gentlem.m had biought to boar on tho affairs of the Society. The motion was put and can ied unanimously. A conversation Yen look place as to improvements in the schedule of exhibits, and ihe Secretary wus in.Yrueted to act upon a suggestion, that he should advertise for fresh
"notion." for popularising the new scnedulc, and submit the suggestions lo tho fir.t meeting ol: the committee to bo suggestion was also
made that the local dramatic corps be requested to give an entertainment in aid of the funds of the Society on tho Prince of Wales Birthday. The meeting then separated with a vote of thanks to tho Chairman.
