AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.

Saturday, May 14,

A meeting of this Board was held on the above date in their office, Duvauchelle's Bay. Present —Messrs Cliappell (in the chair), Shadbolt, Williams, and McDonald. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

INTERVIEWS. Mr Harrington waited upon the Board with reference to some necessary repairs to the road leading to his place, German Bay. The only way in which he could see it could be clone would be to raise the bridge about six feet. He would wish to state that he had contributed about £30 towards the construction of the road in question. Ihe matter was left over for the consideration of the Board. Mr David Curry was also in attendance to ask for something to be done to his road. He had waited now for' about two years to have something done to this road. Tenders having been called for a lower portion of this road, it was agreed to get the contractor to do something to this part. . Mr Checkley asked for something to be I done on the Lighthouse road, especially ' that part over Aylrner's Hill. ' A report oi the Clork was read on the road in question. The Board agreed that something should be done in the matter. Mr Checkley supposed that the Board would not object to his going over the road with a pick and shovel. The Board wasjjcordial in granting this permission, and in the meantime they agreed to attend to tho matler. Mr Tizzard attended to ask .for a road out from his place. The Clerk was instructed to visit and report. Mr Deal also wanted soinething'done to his road at Wainui. The Clerk had alroady reported on the matter. Mr Deal made an offer to do tho work necessary for a certain sum. The matter was left over for consideration. Mr .Anson asked tho Board to help him in getting a road Jine reserved on the Wainui Pass road. It would bo necessary to do this at once, before the Crown grants were issued. The Board agreed to instnict the Clerk to write to the landowners interested, asking their consent to the deviation required. The matter was then left in tho hands of the Board-

CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read— : From the Robinson's Bay School Com- • mitW'e, asking the Board to do something to the road leading , to that school. The Clerk was instructed to get the work ' done if the cost wore not excessive. From Mr Hammond, calling attention . to the state of a culvert in German Bay. The Clerk reported that the culvert was thoronghly rotten. The Clerk was instructed to make an 1 nrrangement with Mr PJanimond if pos--1 si hie. 1 From Messrs O'Kullivan & Co., stating ! that from the Ist of M«y, they considered they had finished their contract on the roads, and they held themselves not responsible for anything that might occur • after that dale. i After considerable discussion between the contractor and the Clerk, it was agreed that Messrs Williams, McDonald, and the Chairman should inspect the roads and see if they were in a lit state to \nt taken ove r . From Messrs Duncan & Cotterill, on behalf of Mr Go. Brcitmeyer, re closing of a C'Ttniri portion of the road at Horseshoe Bend. It was agreed that on Mr Breiiineyer paying ,£5 into the hands of the Board they would take sieps to have the old road closed. From Sir A. Westenra, asking permission to take a fow loads of gravel from tie side of the Ualgueiie road. The matter was left in the hands of the C'erk. From the Manawatu County Council, re meeting of proposed conference in Wellington. From Mr IT. 11. Fenton,. asking the Board to cancel his rates on the ground of liis having given them £i! 0 of work in Waiker.kikai i. To be acknowledged. From Masefield Bros., asking the Board to bench a portion of the road to Gongh's Bay, and offering, in the event of the Board undertaking the work, to advance the necessary funds till after next rating. Tue Clerk was instructed to vsit and report. From the Eangitikei County Council (circular), giving tiieir opinions on quesii .?is of public iinance, etc. To Jie on the table. clerk's report. A report was read from tho Clerk, giving ! an estimate of various works which were before the Board. The Clerk was instructed to confer with Mr Odd , , and endeavor to come to Homo understanding with him about his road. Mr Williams called attention to tho stale of tho three bridges on the main road at DuvauchelloV! Bay. Ho thought that as they were on the main road the County Council should be sipkuci t?> repair 'them. Mr Sbadboil moved ft resolution to that '■■\t,".:t, which wiiii carried.
