The Akaroa Mail. FRIDAY, APRIL 15.

Tiik finniial mcelirg for the purpose of electing n ' committee for the Le Bon's Bay Librnry for the ensuing year was held on Saturdiiy, the Dili inst.. at eight o'clock, in the Public Library. Tfe Bon's Fay. The gentlemen rhosm to foim tho committee were—Messrs Thomas 1.1. Klliotr, 1). Wright, A. Graham, and J. Cairns, Mr Macmiilan still acting ns libra rian. Mr EllioH was elected chairman. It was determined to open the Library for the purpose of changing books for the future only on Saturday ev?ningfi, between seven and nine. Some other small matters were adjusted, and the meeting adjourned.

The legal profession is brilliantly represented in Ashbuiton. A Mr Bradley recently leased a. section of land from the local Borough Co'ini'il, the rentof. which was only £8 per annum. In due time he received (lie little'bill of the Borough Solicitor for draughting the leas \ amounting to the modest sum of £9 11s 10d. It will linrdly be believed, but it is nevertheless trie, that the lessee was unreasonable enough to complain of the account as '• exorbitant;" If that lawyer does not manage to stick another two or three pounds on to the account while it is.being bandied about between himself, the Council, and the lessee, we understand the law society intend to apply to have him struck off the rolls. Meanwhile lawyers manage to make a crust, and John Bull grins and bears it. Fuom the Gazette of tho 4th inst. we notice that amongst the list of teachers whose status before Ihe recent examinatton was " provision .1," Miss Thomas, late of the Akaroa School, and Mr Maemi.lan, of tho Le Bon's Buy Schoo 1 , have now passed in the additional subjects necessary for a full certificate. The Akaroa and Wainni Road Board hold their monthly meeting at their offices. Duvauchelles .Bay, on Saturday, lGth inst. (to-morrom), at 2 p.m.

Mr Montgomery, tho member for the district arrived at Pigeon Bay on Wednesday on his way to French Farm. The honorable gentleman's visit is purely of a private nature, his son being indisposed, lie returns to Christchurch again to-day and intends returning again to address his constituents prior to his leaving for Wellington to attend to his Parliamentary duties. We are informed that Master John McGregor of Akaroa has passed at the recent examination of pupil teacher in Chri tcliurcli for the end of the second year, Icing third in oider of merit, and that Master E. Waskins, of Gorman Bay School, pnfised for the end of the first year. A recent Gazette contains the information that the Commission empowering Dr Julius yon Ilaast of Christchurch to act as Gorman Consul there, received Her Majesty's signature on the 18th. January last, and that the Acts passed during the sess'on of the New Zealand Parliament for 1880 lmve been assented to. Fuom a notice elsewhere it will be seen tlmt the Bank of New Zenland's oHice here will be closed on Saturday, Easter Monday as well as to-day, Good Friday.

A mketino held at the Somerset Hotel last Saturday to form a Committee for the Head of the Bay Races, to be held on the 24th May, was adjourned till Saturday next, ihe lGth inst., as will be seen in our advertising columns. The Board of Education have appointed Miss J. Buxton, late of the Lower Heathcote School, to bo mistress of the Akaroa School. Miss Buxton will commence her duties on 2d May. To show how profitoble walnut growing ma} , be made, we hear that a gentleman in Akaroa gathered over 20,000 off one tree, which sold at 15s per thousand, or £15 for the crop. A few trees of this sort are quite equal to a Government billet under thellall Ministry.

The services at St Peter's Church here on EriFter day will be full choral. The Very Reverend the Dean of Chrihtchurch will assist the incumbent, tho Rev. Mr Stocker, in'the various services of the day.

The Hon. <he Commissioner has been pleaded to approve of the observance of Sunday hou s at all telegraph stations on Knster Monday. Stations required for Press purposes will re-open in the evening at the usual time. Sunday hours will also be observed on Good Fiiday.

As an instance of the want of dignity in some of our local ■ public bodies, an example occurred at the meeting of the Borough Council on Wednesday evening. One member oil tl»c Council having occasion to address n.r> oilier, referred to hi.s brother quite familiarly as "Charlie." His Worship was down on the offendin" , member in an instant, and requested that members of the Council should only lie addressed by their official title. We need scarcely «ay we are quite with Ills Worship on this point.

Mb Q. Mason, of Okain's Bay, met with a rather serious accident at the Somerset Hotel, Head of the Bay, yesterday evening. The girths of his saddle broke and he was dragged some little distance, but was not severely hurt

When some men about, a week ago were engaged digging a well on Messrs lLiy Bros, run, east Pigeon B.iy Heads in what is known as Whitehead Bay. At ft depth of 30ft they" came upon a quantity of Moa honos mixed up with human remains . This is the first authentic instance wo have heard of Moa bones on the Peninsula, but they iray possibly have boon carried to tho locality where they wore found by some of the and may be (he remnants of a feast before the advent of the Pakeha.
