STREET LAMPS.

To the Editor.

Sir, —Could you kindly inform me when the Ligh'ing Committee, if there is such a body of gentlemen in Akaroa, intend filling up tiie framework of those white posts they call lamp-posts, which. I have been informed are used for that purpose in winter. Now, Mr Editor, I really don't understand what rules the Lighting Committee work upon, but I should advise them, before any accidents take place, to buy a shilling packet of candles, if they can't afford kerosene, and light the ornamental pedestals up before the winter fully sets in, as I think it is quite dark enough for them. If they take my tip they will light them up at once, because, if they wait until winter comes on, they won't find any lampposts at all. Being a church-going man, I could not help laughing as I came along the Beach road last Sunday even ing; there wero a few peoi le coining along, and as I was passing a gentleman pedestrian I heard him .ay to some one whom he had come against that sweet word I beg your pardon, and after all he found out it was one of those lovely but lonely lamp-posts, and lie made a \w\et "swore" and said. "I never in all my life begged a lamp-post's pardon before, but I am afraid I m'ght need to do so again, being a stranger in the place, and not knowing where those ornaments they call lamp-posts are planted." 1 intend staying a few days longer, and I should like very much to see the streets of Akaroa by lamplight, as 1 have been told it is a wonderful sight.—l am. etc., DIP.
