AKAROA COUNTY COUNCIL.
Thursday, March 31. A meeting of this < o njil Avas held on tho above date at their office, Duvauchelle's Bay. Present—Messrs Dalglish (in the chair), Bradley, Barker, Flemming, and McDonald. The minutes cf the previous meefing were read and confirmed. chairman's statement. The Chairman read-a statement of the business to be brought before the Council, Avhich appears hereafter. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters Avere read— From Mr Montgomery, offering to present a petition from the Council to the House of Representatives re landed endowments for local bodies out of Avaste lands, and promising the matter his support. Resolved that Mr Montgomery be requestec to present the petition and support its prayer. From Mr J. Olh'vier, District Auditor, requesting the Council to pay tho sum of £300, due for compensation to the estate of the late Mr St. John, to Messrs Harper and Co., he (Mr Ollivier) being satisfied i that the land had been duly conveyed to
the Crown, and they being authorized to receive the money. From tho ManaAvatu County Council, (circular) re endownments and subsidies to local bodies. The Chairman and Mr McDonald expressed their approval generally of tbe sentiments expressed in the circu'ar. Mr Barker thought the matter concerned he public more imtnediatoly than the Council. Mr McDonald proposed a resolution promising support to the scheme proposed. Seconded by Mr Gebbie and carried unanimously. The Clerk .was instructed to enquire, what amount of support the resolutions Avere receiving from other bodies, and report to the next meeting of the Council. From Mr J. Glynan, and five other ratepayers residing at Onuku, asking tho Council to erect a bridge in that locality, as there was a creek near the schoolhouse which prevented the children going to school. The chairman thought it was a matter for the Road Board. Mr McDonald thought the work was a necessary, but concured in the opinion that it was iv the province of the Road Hoard. A resolution Avas agreed to, referring tha petitioners to the Road Board. _J gFrom Mi W. D. Wilkins, informing the Council that he was still prepared to undertake engineering and surveying work for the Council. Letter to be acknowledged. From the Akaroa Borough Council, stating that they had appointed a subcommittee to confer with the County Council on tho sublect of hospitals and charitable aidOn the motion of Mr Gebbie, the following gentlemen Avere appointed a sub-com-mittee to confer Avith that of the Borough Council on the subject:—Messrs Williams, McDonald, and the Chairman. From tho Akaroa and Wainui Road Board, enclosing a letter from their solicitors giving 1 an opinion as to the legality of erecting a pnblic pound on the chain reserve. The Board asked the Cauncil to memorialize the Governor to change the purpose of the portion of the reserve required for the purpose, or, if this were not practicable, to ask His Excellency to allow the pound to be erected thereon subject to its removal if the land were required for other purposes. After some conversation Mr Gebbie moved that the Bo rd be requested to have an accurate suivej and desciiption of tlie site required, made and forwarded to the Council, prior to its next meeting. At present they Avore asked to do something about Avhich they were quite in the dark. The resolution Avas seconded by Mr Barker, and carried unanimously. DOG REGISTRATION. The question of the appointment of a dog ranger came up again, for discussion. Mr McDonald asked lioav many dogs had been registered to dire. The Clerk reported that up to the end of last month the number registered was 455. The appointment of a ranger was deferred for the present. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts Avere passed for payment, —Clerk's salary £32 10s, do travelling expenses £3, Travelling expenses (members) ,£34 13s, Inspector of slaughter-houses £5, printing aud advertising £10 Is.—Total £91 9s. Mr Gebbie proposed that for the future the Clerk be allowed £20 a year for traA'eiling expenses. Seconded by Mr Me Donald and carried. The Council then adjourned till Saturday, April 23.
