AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Wednesday, March 30tii, 1881.
A meeting of this Council was held on the above date at their offices, Balguerie street. Present—His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Crs Noonan, Gutberlet, Brown, Bruce, and Cullen. An apology for absence Avas received from Cr McGregor, he having a severe cold. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters Avere read— From Mr R. Bayley, giving notice of his intention to make some alteration in his premises. From tho Secretary to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, intormiug tho Council that the Mayor of Akaroa was empowered to grant aid in urgent cases: also that there Avas no objection to the dead-house attached to the Hospital being used as a public morgue, From the Manawalu County Couneii (circular), asking co-operation in a scheme for extracting money or endowments for local bodies from the Government. The letters to be acknowledged. PUBLIC WORKS. Cr Cullen reported that he had had an intervieAV with Mr Barwick, who stated that he had not as yet got the specifications for Percy and William streets completed. As soon as they Avere complete the work would be put in hand nt once. In connection with this subject, he mentioned that there Avas a gorse hedge trespassing on the road. He thought the owner should be compelled to remove the encroachment in accordance Avith the byelaAv, Avhich he quoted. A reso'ution to this eifect Avas agreed to. FINANCE. The receipts since last meeting Avere reported to be £2 10s. The credit balance was slated at £87 18s. Tho following accounts Avere passed for payment:—C Burn's, filling culverts £1 ; Clerk's sa'ary £4 3s 4d. A COMPLAINT. The Mayor reported that a complaint had been made to the Town Clerk that some damage had been done to some scrub on the reserve at present let to M. Ditely. It was resolved that the off3iiding per 'son be written to and cautioned, referring him to the bye law on the subject. BALGUERIE STREET. Cr Cullen asked it* there Avere anything before the Council in reference to this Avork. He thought they should show that they were in earnest in tho matter. The Mayor said that Mr Barwick had not as yet furnished a report on tins Avork. ASHBURTON RESERVES. The Mayor recalled the attention of the Council to. the state of affairs concerning these reserves. They avouKl remember that at the last meeting Cr Sunckell had informed them that Mr Gundry had stated that he thought the price asked by the Council was too high. It Avould be for them to consider whether it would not be advisable to accept a lower rent rather than to allow the reserves to lie idle. Cr Cullen moved that Mr Gundry be written to, asking to forward to the Council any bond fide offer he might receive for the reserves, Avith his recommendation thereon. The motion Avas carried. AKAROA WHARVES. The Mayor said he regretted to see that so many councillors were absent, as they had some very important business to transact in relation to the whaives. Cr Cullen thought it would be advisable to hold a special meeting for the purpose, so to secure a full attendance of councillors. The suggestion was agreed to, and the Clerk instructed to call a special meeting to be held on Monday next. TELKGRAniIO CHARGES. It Avas resolved to write to the Government again on the subject of the extra telegraphic chaiges made at the Akaroa station, calling attention to the former communications from the Council on the subject Avhich the Government liavu failed to answer. The Council then adjourned.
