AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD
Saturday, March 19. A meeting of tliis Board was held on the above dale at their offices, Duvauchelle's Bay. Present—Messrs Williams (in the chair), Piper, Shadbolt, and Me Donald. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read— From the Press company informing the Board that that journal had been appointed a Gazette. From the clerk to the County Council, enclosing copy of resolution, confirming stoppage o£ the Old Duvauchelle'a Bay Road. It was resolved to give public notice of the road being stopped according to the Public Works Act. From Mr G. S. Sale, stating that he intended to put a fence across hi 3 land which would ha\e the effect of stopping the traffic on the old road from Barry's Bay to French Farm. He gave this notice that the Road Board might take what steps they tbought fit to prevent public inconvenience. From Mr J. Ollivier, Provincial District Auditor, informing the Board that he had audited the accounts, and that he found a large amount of rates in arrear. He considered that all defaulters should be sued forthwith, as it waa manifestly unfair to exact payment from one and not to enforce it upon another. ' From eight settlers at Wainui, begging the Board to make a road a distance of about twelve chains from Sadler's road to section 27,445. The Clerk was instructed to visit and report. From Mr W. McKay, offering to allow his land to be used af a thoroughfare on the Mount Bosau road for 30s per month. He would give the use of ths land free for two months as soon as the Board let a contract. The Boord offered 20s which Mr McKay refused. Finally Mr McKay agreed to take 20s a month until completion of contract, striking out the two months gratis. From Messrs Harper and Co, (telegram) promising to prepare conveyance "Rhodes to the Queen." They had had no previous instructions.
From the Trustees of, the Dissenters' emetery, Akaroa, asking the Board to (ake into consideration the forming of a piece of road leading from the main road to the cemetery gates, so aa to make it available for fnnerals. From Mrs Rowe, asking that something might be done to the road leading to Children's Bay. With regard to these two applications, Ihe Clerk was ordered to visit and report on them. From Milea and Co.. re the land of Messrs Rhodes required for the Wainui flat road. From Mr J. Gillialt, enclossing chequefor rates, and complaining of being assessed for 100 great an acreage. To be informed that this was a matter in which the Bpax4*ftQJilldLxwt interfere. From Messrs Harper ; ah"d Co., advising the Board how to proceed in the matter of tho proposed ejection 6fUhe'pdund on chain reserve. It was resolved to write to'the County Council, asking them to move the Government to grant the Board authority t® erect the pound .on the reserve.
