BANKS' PENINSULA FARMERS' CLUB.

A meeting of tbe Committee of the above associa.ion was held at the Criterion Hotel, Akaroa, on Saturday last. The President was in the chair; there were also present—Mr W. Barnett, VicePresident, Messrs Hunt, Johnson, Goodwin, Checkley, Duxbury, Hon. Sec, and several other members of the club. Tbe minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Mr A. Westenra, agent for the Bank of New Zealand, was present, and read some correspondence, held on behalf of the Club with the New Zealand Shipping Company, relative to providing a special compartment for cheese in one of their vessels, about to leave Lyttelton shortly. It appeared from the correspondence read, and the discussion which took place thereon, that the object of the club was to induce the company to provide a special compartment for dairy produce wherein the temperature might be reduced within the tropics to between 50 and 70 degs. Correspondence was also read from Mr W. Montgomery, M.H.R., on the same subject, and congratulating the farmers of the Peninsula for having taken the very proper course of forming themselves into a mutual benefit association. After the correspondence bad been read, an animated discussion took place as to the method of combating the destructive heat of the tropics, many maintaining an opinion expressed by Mr Coster—tbat if a sufficient current of air were forced through the compartment to dissipate the gases usually generated by a large quan lity of cheese closely packed, it would be sufficient to ensure its arrival in good order. Letters of a commercial character (private) were read, and one from Mr W. Bateman re co-operation. The Secretary was requested to have 200 copies of the rules printed for distribution amongst members. Several new members paid their subscriptions, and were added to the list. The secretary was ulho instructed to obtain further information from (he New Zealand Shipping Company a,s to their intention with regard to fitting up a compartment, etc., and, if possible, to have the same ready for next meeting, which will be held at Brook's Somerset Hotel. Head of the It iy, on Saturday, March 19, at 1 p.m.
