ASSESSMENT COURT.

The Assessment Court for tho revision of the Valuation List for the Borough of Akaroa eat yesterday at the Courthouse Akaroa. Mr J. Ayhner presided as judge, and the valuer (Mr W. Sims) appeared to support the valuation.

A. Lelou was called, but did not appear,

Mr Leleu made an application to bo registered as owner of certain property in place of Mra Guindon.

Some misunderstanding occurred as to this application and one imuie by the valuer to have Mr Lcilou'b name inacrted for some h ctiona which had boon omitted altogether. Ultimately both applications

were granted

Wilfrid Johnson objosted to the valuation of a paddock he was occupying. He was rated at £10 a your for the paddock and was only paying £5.

Mr Sims eaid there was no dou'r-t the property was worth £200, aud he submitted that the valuation was not escea sive, as the Act provided that in no case should it be less than 5 per cent on value of the fee simple. Valuation sustained. W. Chamberlain, Wagstuffa Hotel, valued at £150, withdrew his objection. A. Rodrigues, Madeira Hotel, valued at £90, objected. Ho said last year the valuation was only £80, and business had certainly not improved since then. Mr Sims said that whatever value was set down last year they had nothing to do with. The property had a frontage to two principal streets, and ho was quite sure Mr Rodrigues would not let it for £120. Within a few yards a hotel was lot for £300. Valuation sustained. Charles Armstrong, house and garden, Balguerio street, £25. Mr Armstrong was positive that if ho wanted to let tho cottage, it would not fetch more than £20. ; The Court declined to reduce the amount, and sustained the valuation. F. Arming, shop and dwelling, Church street, £52. Mr Sims had had no notice of tho objection. F. Arming, in explanation, said he was not aware that it was necessary to send one in. As ho did not take the A haroa Mail, he had not seen the advortistnent containing the notification. Mr Sims still objected, and the decided that the objection could not be entertained. Robert Bayloy, Waekerle's Hotel, rated at £90, objected. He wanted to know where the present valuer had received his education for the office. The late valuer had put £5 on to the property, but that was "by way of a joke." Tho present addition of £10, however, was made as a matter of business. The Court declined to discuss the valuer's qualifications. He had been appointed by the Council, and if Mr Bayley thought lie was not suitable, he should get into the Council and have somn one else appointed. Tho valuation would be sustained. John Yewen objected that his name was omitted from the roll, and further that he was over-rated. { Mr Sims had no objection to Mr Ye wen's j ii amo being , inserted, but objected to the amount being , reduced. The Court ordered Mr Ye wen's nr,mu to ti.i inserted.

John Cullon objected to the valuation of two properties—the house in which ho was living, valued at £35 ; and that occupied by Mr W. 11. Wood, valued at £30. It was shown that tho latter was let at £25.

After some sparring between Mr Cullen and the valuer, the Court reduced the valuations to £30 and £25 respectively.

On the application of the valuer, the namo of Elizabeth Malmanche was inserted on the roll as owner of three sections, formerly Mr Guindon's, and Mr B. Percival was substituted for T. J, Joynt for a portion of section 39.

With regard to another portion of the same section, Mr Sims sought to have the name of Mr F. Moore inserted as occupier. Mr Moore denied being either owner or

occupier,

The states of affaire with regard to those sub-sections seemed to be rather mixed. It was elicited that it was for this. No man's land that the Borough had failed to recover rates last year.

The case was adjourned till Thursday, March 17.

The Court then adjourned,
