AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.
January 22nd, 1881
A meeting of this Board was held on tho above date at their offices, Duvauchclle's Da} , . Present:—Messrs Cliappell (in the chair), McDonald, Piper and Williams. The business commenced at 5*30 p.m The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed ; as also those of the public meeting of ratepayers for the purpose of considering tho closing of the old Duvauclmlle's Bay road. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. Mr Piper proposed that Mr Cliappell be chairman for the ensuing year. In doing B®, he paid a tribute to the manner in which he had fulfilled the duties of the office. Mr Williams seconded the motion. Mr Chappell would rather be excused, as he lived at such a distance from the office. However he finally withdrew his objections, and the motion was carried. office nouns. It was resolved that tho office bo kept open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. till 4 p.m. FINANCE. a ford in* the creek, in consequence of whicli a portion of his land was being cut up. Mr Piper thought it was high time that this matter was settled. There was a deficiency of £80 in the accounts which had been paid away without receiving an equivalent. Ho considered the Board should recover this amount. Mr McDonald proposed—That Mr Cell be called upon to convey to the Queen the road through his own and Mr Intnan's property according to his agreement with the Board. Seconded by Mr Williams, and carried. FRENCH FARM ROAD. The following letter was read from the Minister of Public Works concerning the closing of this road :— Public Works Office, Wellington, December 23, 1880. Sir, —I am directed by the Minister for Public Works to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 14th inst, forwarding statutory declaration relative to the taking of certain lands in French Farm Bay, Akaroa, for road purposes. In reply, I am to point out that the plan submitted with the memorial shows "roads o be closed," as well as land to be taken for roads ; and the Minister cannot understand why this should bo so, as the proceedings for closing roads are quite distinct from the action taken under Part 11. of " The Public Works Act, 1876." The Minister having ascertained that this has misled persons interested, and who have not therefore had fair notice within the meaning of the Act, directs me to state that His Excellency the Governor cannot be advised to issue the proclamation in terms of your request. —I have, etc., G. T. Benzoni, Assistant Under-Secretary, Public Works. To Chairman, Akaroa and Wainui Road Board, Duvauchelle's Bay, Akaroa. GERMAN BAY SCHOOL. A letter was iead from the Committee of this School, asking for a few pipes for the purpose of carrying the water from a culvert on the Long Bay Road, which empties itself behind the new side school* —Granted. ANOTHER CULVERT. Mr W. Wright wrote to ask for some pipes to form a crossing on the road leading to his house. The Clurk to ascertain if the spot were on the Government road ; if so, the request to be granted. MAINTENANCE OF ROADS. A conversation took place aa to the manner in which the contractors for the maintenance of the main roads were failing to carry out the provision of their contracts according to specifications. The clerk was instructed to call upon the contractors to fulfil their engagements, and in the event of their failing to call upon their sureties to do so. THE LATE ENGINEER. Mr Williams thought that as their late engineer, Mr Fenton, was about to leave the district, it would only bo a gracefuj act for the Board to present him with nn address before his departure. Ho moved a resolution to that effect, which was carried unanimously. PAYMENTS. The following accounts were passed for payment: —P. Shad bolt, Lo Bon's track, L 8; J. Barwick, L 3 17s Gd ; W. Sims, Returning Officer, LI Is ; printing and adver tising, L 8 10s ; total, L2l 8s Gd. The Board them adjourned till Saturday) February 12.
