AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

* The annual meeting of the Akaroa Borough Council was held, pursuant to Section 70 of " The Municipal Corporations Act," on Wednesday last at noon. At the hour appointed there were present — His Worship the Mayor, Crs Garwood (the Mayor elect), Noonan,'Cullen, and Bruce. A few minutes after the commencement of the proceedings, Crs McGregor and Black entered ; and later. Crs Sunckell and Brown put in an appearance. The Mayor stated the object of the meeting, which was to instal tbe new Mayor in bis office. Cr Garwood moved a resolution expressing the appreciation of the Council of the manner in which the outgoing Mayor had performed the duties of his office, and thanking him for the same. The Mayor elect then made, the declaration required by the Act, and took his se.it. The motion was then put and carried unanimously. Mr Penlington expressed his thanks for the manner in which the Council had appreciated his efforts. The new Mayor then made a short sp<-'e-h, expressing his hope that, although inexperienced in the duties he had undertaken, the Council would bear with his shortcomings. He was glad to remark that his predecessor had left them out of debt. He hoped they would all bear and forhenr, and be prepared, for the welfare of the Borough, to give a long pull, a strong pull, and a pull altogether. A letter was read from Mr W. Chamberlain, asking pormission to erect a siirn on the bridge over Bruce's Creek, on the occasion of the regatta. Permission was granted, subject to the usual conditions. Some one having made a remark as to an odoriferous drain— Cr McGregor said they appeared to be drifting into the consideration of matters of detail. He considered the business which had brought them together that day was the installation of the new Mayor. He thought they would not be doing their duty unless they endorsed the action of the burgesses in the selection made by them. On the part of himself and his fellow-councillors he promised the new Mayor the full support of the Council. In their names he also wished to congratulate him on his elevation to his present position of first citizen and burgess. In every respect he was worthy of the position. He had long been connected with the place, and identified with its fortunes. Once more, in the name of the Council, he would congratulate His Worship on the honorable position which he now occupied.

His Worship expressed his acknowledgments in suitable terms, and the proceedings terminated.
