The Metropolitan Meeting opened on Tuesday with weather that could not have been better had it been ordered. Cool, gray, and pleasant, it was such weather as the flyers of the turf could best display their powers in, while it afforded every opportunity for the ladies to show off to advantage the rather striking colors in costume which are now so fashionable. Time —lm 45£ sec. There were 121 £2 shares in the totalisator, of whom thirteen were on the winner. The Derby Stakes— a sweepstakes of 20 soys each, with 250 soys added, for three-year-olds. Colts, Bst 101b ; fillies, Bst 51b. Second horse to save his stake. One mile and a-half. Closed with 39 subs. Campbell's be Sir Modred, Bat 101b (Harris) 1 Webb's b f Virginia Water, Bst 51b (Derritt) 2 Muorhouse's eh c Badsworth, Bst 101b (Rudings) '6 Lure, Tho Governor, and Nautilus also started. Tho Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap--a sweepstakes of 20 soys each, with 500 kovs added. Second horse to receive 50 soys from the stake ; third horse to save his stake. Two miles. Betrayer, Hornby, Luna, Sir George, Miss Domett, and Kosciusko also came to the scratch.
The Welcome Stakes—a sweepstakes of 15 Boys each, with 200 soys added, for two-year olds. Colts and geldings, Bst 51b; fillies, Bst. Second horse to save

Four others also started. Idiilium was scratched. Time—ol^secs. 7116 Hack race produced the unusually large field of nineteen, ami was won pretty easily by Joker (late Waitaki). He was well ridden by Webster. The winner is not a bnd bred one, being by Malton, and started a few years sinco for the Champagne Stakes at the autumn meeting. He has lately been used as a hack by H. , I uller.
