HORTICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the above Committee was hold in the schoolroom last Tuesday evening. The Rev. 11. Stocker occupied tho

chair

Tho report of tho committee appointed to revise the horticultural schedule for tho forthcoming exhibition was received and, with certain amendments, adopted.

It was resolved that where numbers were specified any greater or lesser number entered would disqualify the exhibit.

The recommendations mado by the committee of ladies appointed to eupervis-e the entries in the needlo-work department was next read and, with a few amend-

ments, adopted

It was resolved, in accordance with suggestions contained in the report, that tho work to be s ! iown be unwashed, and that no work previously shown be exhibited.

The Committee decided that a prize should be given for the best made baskets made by the exhibitor ; likewise that every exhibit in the Industrial Department must be the bona fide work of the exhibitor.

It was determined to offer a prize for rustic work, such as flower stands, garden seats, etc.; live ferns in a glass case were also included.

A letter was read from Mr W. 11. Henning, stating that he had written to Messrs Fergusson and Mitchell, asking for a schedule of prices for printing copies of schedules of prizes and entries for the exhibition, and enclosing a reply from that firm; at the same time he stated that it wsukl be a mistake to send the work out of the place, and liable to work injuriously to the Committee.

The Chairman stated that in his opinion Mr Wiggins, of The Akaroa Mail, had always acted most liberally, both in the prices charged for advertisements, and in giving prizes ;he considered the work should be done in the place. Mr Westenra concurred with tho Chairman's opinion. Mr W. 11. Henning thought as long as the work could be done in the place at a reasonable price it should be done ; but he considered it absurd for the Committee to say that the work must be done in the place at whatever price they might be charged, or not be done at all. Mr Westenra proposed, and Mr Harris seconded—" That the printing be given to Messrs Wiggins and Co., the Secretary to be empowered to make arrangements as to price." Mr Henning proposed that the printingbe given to the lowest tenderer. Mr Nicholls seconded the amendment. Mr Jollie thought that seeing the affair was a purely local affair if would be wrongto send the work out of the place for.the sake a few shilling;'. Tlii' amendment on being put was lost ; Messrs Ilonning ar.d Nichoils alone voting for it ; the original motion was carried A list of those who had either promised or given pnV.-i-'-.was then rovA. after which ihe. meeiing adj'MiPie.'l.
