The Akaroa Mail. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 3.

We rail the attention of those of our readers who are interested in the matter that the quarterly meeting of tho Liceusing Court will be held next Tuesday at noon, in the Resident Magistrate's Court-house.

As will be seen elsewhere, the General Assembly has teen prorogued and the session is at an end. The Times correspondent says :—The prorogation to-day was a very dreary affair. Only 16 members of the Lower House, about the same number of the Council, were present. The spectators numbered, besides the Press representatives, one stranger, one lady, and a little girl. The whole thing was •looked upon a3 a fitting conclusion to an unsatisfactory session. Hia Excellency the Governor leaves Wellington, en route for England, on Saturday. The Chief Justice will fill the position of Administrator of the Government till the arrival of the new Governor, and Mr Justice Johnson goes north to repl ace the former. A Ga-elle notice has bean issued extending the time for sending in returns under the Property Assessment Act till Sept. 30. The forms of return have been simplified, and the amended ones will be issued without delay. No alterations have been made in the exemption under the Act of last year. Failing the withdrawal of notices in connection with the 10 per cent, reduction, the whole of the men employed on the Amberley-Palmerston section of the railway .By stem intend to cease work on Saturday, Sept. 11. We would remind our readers that Mr Brooks, the worthy Boniface of the Somerset Hotel, Head of the Bay, will hold his maiden auction sale to-day at his yards, when he will bring to the hammer a large and well selected stock of cattle, horses, pigs, etc. The Port Levy Road Board are pushing ahead with public improvements in their district at a pace that is quite creditable to them. A short time since under their direction a road, the construction of which was attended with more than ordinary difficulties, was made and finished from the wharf at Port Levy to connect with the main road. The work of connecting Port Levy with Purau (Rhodes Bay) by a good waggon road was then undertaken, and the first section from Port Lsvy to the summit of tho ranges duly completed. The second section connecting with this and terminating at Bhodes Bay wharf, is on the point of completion by tho contractors, Messrs. Holmes and Higgs, and will, it is expected, bo officially opened for traffic next Friday. It will not be long at the rate road making is being prosecuted in this locality, before it will be possiblo to drive direct through from Rhodes Bay to Akaroa via Pigeon Bay. A meeting of the Little River School Committee was held in the schoolroom last Saturday evening. Present—Messrs Coop (in the chair), Wallers, Johnson, Smith, Olphert, and Jacobsen. Theminules of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman reported having received a latter from the Board of Education, stating that the luspector would visit the school on September Gill, also letter from Mr Westropp, also having received from tho late Chairman the sum of LI 10s for use of schoolroom, also accounts from Messrs Crerar and Whit combe Mr 11. Longey waited upon theCommi tee with reference to his son, and having apologised for him. it was unanimously regolved that the boy be re admitted to the school. Tho Chairman was requested to ask Mr Westropp for account of books. The Chairman reported having advertised for an assistant mistsoss, and no applications having been received, it was resolved to advertise again, and acquaint the Board of Education of the fact, and also inform it that Mr Westropp takes charge of the school on Sept. 1, and that Mr Johnson's time expires on Aug. 31. We would inform our readers that there is at Mr Rodrigues' Madeira Hotel a complete instrument necessary for the photographer's art, and in first-class order. The same is to be raffled for the low sum of L9—lß members at 10s each, an opportunity to any who may have- a fancy for amusing themselves in the art of photography which may not happen again for years. Already ten tickets are taken up, so we wouljjl advise any who may think of going in for it to look sharp about it. We have extra pleasure in drawing attention to this object, as the lady to whom the camera belongs is well known, and not better known than esteemed. She has lately met with a bereavement, which has left her in greatly reduced circumstances. We trust her friends will rally round her. We have been favored by Mr Dixon. Steward of th« Akaioa Hospital, with following statement of returns from that institution for the month ending August 31, 1880:—Admitted—Male.4 3, females, 1 ; died—Males 0, females, 0 ; discharged —Maleu 5, females 0 ; total in ho.spi'al on the above date—Males 1, female.-* 1.

Thk friends of retrrnehment urns be t - some extent staggered at the Borough Council voting over L sat their last meeting in connection with the meeting in the Town Hall relative to the postal service agitation. In tho pres.-nt state of the Borough finance, an 1 the small re" suits of the affair, tho price is high, and in future His Worship should be on his guard before acquiescing in requisitions which commit the ratepayers to expenses beyond their meaus. The old adage, '' New brooms sweep clean," was surely never more decidedly verified than by the act of our old and esteemed friend, Cr McGregor. Retrenchment in Borough Council matters being the order of the day, ho takes the bull by the horns in a most determined manner; h j first strenuously opposes any steps being taken towards entering into a fresh contract for the lighting of our Borough lamps ; he next proposes that the timber belonging to the Council should be sold. Cr Bruce, with his dry humor, suggested that if selling was to be the order of the day it might be as well to sell the Borough clock and lamp. A message has been received in tho House of Representatives from the Governor, announcing that the Deceased Wife's Sister Marriage Bill had been resorved for the assent of Her Majesty. At a largely attended meeting of rail way employees at Christchurch on Wednesday evening it was resolved to cease work after the last train's arrival Thursday night, if at noon that day (when the notice from the men expired) the announcement of the 10 per cent reduction had not been withdrawn.

Regarding the late mysterious murder at Kyeburn, the following appears in the Dunedin S/ar under date August 27 :— Ah Lee has confessed that he and Lee Guy procured stones on the night of the murder from a neighbouring yard. They struggled with Mrs Young and left her for dead. They anticipated getting a large sum of money, but not finding it would not take her purse and its small contents. On a late date we learn that the Chinesa prisoner Ah Leo has been committed for trial.
