GARDEN MEMORANDUM FORTHE MONTH OF AUGUST. ._:—* j(Wriiten expressly for T,he Akaroa Mail.) , Kitchen GABDtw. Those, who have had their vacant ground , dug up roughly to the action of the weather in the early part of the winter will howfind it in good condition for cropping from the ease with which it can be broken down and prepared for the sowing of seeds. When the > weather is favorable, many of principal crops of vegetablea may be sown this month—such as onions, ileeks, cirrots, parsnips, beet, cabbage, cauliflower, etc. Sow peas, broad beans, lettuce, spinach, parsley, 1 herbV etc. ; plant early potatoes on dry, well drained ground; land up and stake early pea*; root» of onions, carrots, parsnip and cabbage intended !for seed should now be set in sheltered places; plant rhubarb and asparagus, «)ep the main crop of ehalots. Keep the ground well stirred between tbe rows of advancing, crops of cabbage, cauliflower, etc. ' '';'<) FbUITGaBDBN.' , Proceed with the transplanting of fruit trees, bushes, raspberry canes, and strawberry plants. Remove all suckers from the roots of fruit treee, and get all; pruning finished ' this ! month. Some- half-decom-posed manure spread over the roots of newly-planted fruit troos, will prove beneficial. Plant hedgerows of thorn, sweetbriar, etc. Flower Gabdbn.
Late flowering bulbs—such as lilies and gladioli—may still be planted ; divide and plant flower roots of all hardy thinga ; sow both annual and perennial flower seeds, transplant shrubs, and secure by stakes those which may be in danger from windPlant edgings of rose, thyme, dwarf roses, camomile, rosemary, etc.
