AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
+ A special meeting of the above Council was held in their chambers, Balguerie Street, on Wednesday last. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs Black, Bruce, Kissel, Cullen, Armstrong and Henning. MINUTES. The minutes.of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman suggested the desirability of expunging the minutes of the last special meeting, but as Cr Cullen stated that Cr Wiggins had not authorized the Clerk to make the statement he had made at the last meeting with regard to Cr Wiggins having stated that in his opinion the motion of the former meeting was illegal, the minutes were allowed to remain. VALIDITY of burgess roll. The Mayor explained that his object in calling the meeting was to consider the desirability of asking the Government to validate the Burgess roll, the step being necessary owing to the time for that step set down in the Act, having elapsed without its being done. It was proposed by Cr Bruce, seconded by Cr Cullen, and carried—"That, the Clerk be instructed to write to the Government, requesting them to legalise the Burgess roll." TOWN CLERK. The next step was to take steps to dismiss the present Town Clerk (Mr R. M. Barry) and to appoint another one. It was proposed by Cr Henning, seconded by Cr An_ocrong — " That the Town Clerk be informed that his services be dispensed with as from the date of suspension, viz., May 5." Carried. His Worship stated that it would be necessary to advertise for a Town Clerk, and to state the amount of salary offered for the work. Cr Bruce asked whether the for the Clerk to be in daily attendance might not be shortened. Cr Henning moved—-"That applications be invited for the office of Town Clerk at
• a salary of £75 per annum, applications to be sent in by Boon on Wednesday, June 9." He suggested that the services should be daily, and the hours from eleven to one.
Cr Bruce seconded the motion. Cr Cullen thought the work might be done for less. He would move— 4 ' That applications be called for for the office of Town Clerk, the Clerk to render his services every other day, to act as Returning Officer, to collect rates, and to attend every meeting of the Council, the salary to be fixed at £50 per annum, applications to be sent in by Wednesday, June 9.'* Seconded by Cr Kissel. Cr Henning said he thought it treasonable to expect a man to do all the work required from the Town Clerk as well as the onerous duties of Returning Officer for the paltry sum of £50. He was afraid Buch a step would have the effect of perhaps giving the office to someone in charity, who might use the office for their own ends. The amendment, being put,- was carried, Crs Bruce and Henning alone dissenting. His Worship stated that with regard te the advertisement,, that matter mast be left to the Finance Committee. The Council then adjourned.
