MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.
To the Editor of the Akaroa Mail.
Sir, —The statement of your correspondent is correct. The treasurer has paid money out of his own pocket; the late treasurer has still in his bands the funds of the society. I have not called a meeting because I cannot see any hope at present of carrying out the objects of the society, and it would be useless to call together the members to discuss the financial state of the society until the late treasurer has paid over the funds now in his hands. Yours, &c, HARRY STOCKBR. To the Editor of the Alcaroa Mail. Sir, —I noticed in your leading article a few days ago the advisability of calling a public meeting relative to the Property Tax, and I quite agree with your sentiments expressed therein. I think the Chairman of the County Council should call a public meeting, to be held at the County Council office, and the Mayor or Borough Councillors should call a public meeting to bo held at Akaroa. As I con sider the Property Tax is a very unjust tax, and if the people don't bestir themselves and try an 1 get it done away with, they will feel it ever afterwards. Hoping a public meeting will be called ct as early a date as possible, I remain, yours &c, RATEPAYER.
