ONE THING AND ANOTHER.

(Collated from our Exchanges.) An ingenue.—A Western traveller came up to a "log cabin and asked for a drink, which was supplied by a goodlooking young woman. As she was the firßt woman he bad seen for several days, he offered her a dollar for a kiss. It was duly given and paid for, and the young hostess, who had never seen a dollar before, looked at it a moment with «ome curiosity, then asked what she would do with it. He replied what she chose, as it was hers. "If that's the cape," said she, " You may take it back and give me another kiss. ,. At the Lancashire Assises Lord Justice Brett, in sentencing a young farmer to two months' imprisonment for manslaughter during a fight, was led to lament the degeneracy of the times. He said he could remember the time when in no village in England would a man fight unfairly, for if he did every one would scout him ; but now Englishmen fight like cowards. Although fighting was contrary to the law, he had made up his mind that if a man fought fairly he would not punish him should an accident result from the fight; but in this case the prisoner had struck his antagonist in the stomach, and had also kicked him when he was down. I wonder how many stories I could relate if so required by my Queen, my country, and the Frees Company Limited in connection with the sweating of hard earned cheques. .Some day I shall write a very interesting article on this connection. At present I shall confine myself to a little story which has lateiy reached tup, which appears to me to convey a great moral lrs«on to, as the advertisements say,. " publicans and others." The way was long, the wind was cold (excuse my Silas Weggiam, but really it's very

? effective) and the swagger was very '<■ footsore and jolly, jolly old. In a wcll--1 known pub he saw the light of the houee- " hold fire gleam warm and bright, and he entered with a cheque for £41 concealed about his person. Three days afterwards he left with Is 6d. The landlord told i him he was sad about the affair, but ■ people shouldn't play euchre without : knowing the rudiments of the game. ; Another year passed, and again the aged J wayfarer approached the pnblichouse, . this time again with a fair cheque. The ; wayfarer had meantime learned euchre. . He was thoroughly conversant with the ' game in all its branches, and if you know anything of this noble pastime you are ; perhaps aware that with some players it ; has many branches. The wayfarer did '. not drink to any extent, and only re- ! mained two days, but he took away his l own cheque and £47 10s in good money ; from the landlord, after paying expenses. This is one of the most striking instances of the triumph of virtue over vice that ever came under my notice, and I give it for what it is worth andean vouch for its veracity.—" Loafer in the street."
