Original Correspondence

[We are at -all times ready to give expression to every shade of opinion, but in ' no case do we hold ourselves responsible for the sentiments of our correspondents.]

To the Editor of the Alviroa Mail. Sir, —In your issue of April 9, I notice a letter signed " Ratepayer," in which he has " a fling" at one of the members of the County •Conncil receiving travelling expenses, and thinks that the honor of being a member of that Council should be a sufficient recompense. Now, Sir, •will you publish this letter for me, in which I must tell him, moit distinctly, that not only do I reckon it no honor to be dragged forty miles on horseback at my own expense, but also that I will not hold my seat without the said allowance of travelling expenses. With regard to his " other fling " at our worthy Clerk, all I can say is that we pay for our brains. I give second rate hands £40 a year and keep them in the bargain. Surely our worthy ratepayer cannot find " plenty competent men " to undertake the duties of our Clerk and devote their whole time to the business for £65 per year and keep themselves. Had they not better seek a billet with me? Yours, &c, ONE OF THE MEMBERS.
