Sydney, April 8
In the Legislative Assembly last night the Bill to define the powers of the Legislative Council was read a second time. Sir Henry Parkes, Premier, stated that lie would proceed no further with the Bill until a similar measure which had been introduced in the Upper House had been dealt with.
The following exhibition awards are announced : — Furniture— Seaford, of Auckland, specially commended ; first ■class, Lunge and Townley, Napier, and Carl Paten,- Wellington ; second class, Guthrie and Larnach, Dunedin, Nicholson, Wellington; third class, Burt, of Dunedin. First class awards— To Bnrt for gas; Allers Petersen, Christchurch (special), for silver jug ; Guthrie, for hall door. Second class awards — Greenfield and Stewart, for mantelshelf ; Halley, Ewing, and Stewart, all of Wellington, for doors ; and Sandstein, of Christchurch, for epergne. Third class awards—Scott, for stones ; Child and White, Christchurch, for cone work.
Arrived—Hero, from Auckland, yes ierday.
Melbourne, April 8.
There is moderate business doing in oats. It is understood that a large business is expected to be done in Mauritius sugar.
Arrived— Union Company's Te Anau from N'hy Zealand.

Melbourne, April 7
The Hon. Mr Duncan Gillies, Commissioner of Railways, in reply to a deputation, said that a railway loan would be floated in two months' time.
The applicetion which was made in banco against Mr D. Syme, proprietor of the Age, for commenting on an action for libel while still svb jndice, has been discharged, the defendant regretting having made the comments, and paying all costs. Obituary—Mr Menzies, hotelkeeper. Sydney, April 7.
The following further Exhibition awards have been announced :—Walton for basils, and Burt, of Dunedin, for refrigerator, both first-class. Burt's refrigerator was also highly commended. In the Legislative Council last night the Education Bill passed through committee.
