Gisborne, Feb. 24. ' There is considerable excitement here about the oilsprings. A member of the firm of: Clarke, Bros;, Melbourne, and Mr Fleming, the representative of Canada at the Melbourne Exhibition, who is an oil expert, have visited the spring's. Mr Fleming says that the indications equal anything to be seen in America. It is believed probable that a Company with a capital of £60,000 will be floated to work the oil, and operations will be immediately commenced.

New Plymouth,, Feb. 24.

No. 4 Company A.C., stationed at Okatu have subscribed £8417s towards the Irish Relief Fund. The amount is being forwarded by post for transmission Home. One man subscribed £5; and Nos. 1 and 2 Companies stationed at Waihi, subscribed £45.

Port Chalmers, Feb. 24.

A fire was discovered in the lower hold of the ship Marlborough at ten o'clock last, night. It proceeded from some bales of greasy wool, which were found in a state of combustion. The Fire Brigade went on board and succeeded in breaking out the bales, four of which were partially consumed. The fire is attributed to carelessness* in using lights in the hold. ,
