AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Friday, Feb. 20.
A meeting of this Council was held at their offices, Balguerie street, on the above
date.
Present—His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Crs Kissel, Chad wick, Bridge, O'Reilly, Bruce, and Cullen.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
His Worship stated that during his late visit to Christchurch he had had an interview with Mr Coster, Manager of the Bank of New Zealand, and that gentleman had informed him that his Bank would honor the Council's cheques for their outstanding liabilities. He also gave him to understand that he would sanction an overdraft to a moderate amount. A cordial vote of thanks was passed to his Worship for the interest he had shown in the affairs of the Borough. CORRESPONDENCE. The Clerk read the outward correspondence. A letter was read from the Education Board, enclosing a prospectus ißsued by the Education Department re instruction of deaf mutes. FINANCE. In the absence of the Chairman of the Finance Committee, his Worship the Mayor reported that the Bank overdraft was the same as at last meeting (about £130), but there was about £6 in hand. Cr Kissel thought that the Bank-book should be balanced and brought forward at every meeting. The Mayor said that the Clerk should have done so. Tie Clerk explained that no moneys had been paid in since, therefore that the balance remained the same. ORDINARY BUSINESS. Cr Bridge asked the Council for a few minutes' attention. He wished to ask them at the next meeting to take the wharves under their consideration. He showed the present state of the wharves, and also quoted the annual income from the Government Wharf, and urged that the Council should consider the question fully at their next meeting. He also trusted that councillors would make themselves fully acquainted with the subject. NOTICE OF MOTION. Cr O'Reilly moved that by-law No. 42, relating to driving cattle through the Borough, be repealed. He urged that it was necessary to repeal this law, and mentioned an instance where Mr Glynan, who drove sheep through the town after impounding them, not being able to find the owner, was therefore summonsed for so doing and finsd. Cr O'Reilly said the Council remembered that he had on a previous occasion, presented a petition on this subject, which was defeated. He hoped that, as there was no means of going round the town by any by-street, the Council would not put any obstruction in the way to farmers and dealers in stock.
Cr Chadwick seconded the motion
Cr Cullen thought that if the by-law was pressing on farmers it should be rescinded.
His Worship pointed out that seven days' notice must be given of any such motion.
Cr Bridge asked the Council to put off the discussion on the question until next meeting, to give councillors time to think over the matter.
Cr O'Reilly wished the matter to be brought forward at once.
His Worship ruled that this could not be done.
The Council then adjourned.
