After some conversation the matter dropped and the minutes were confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE; The Clerk read the outward correspondence, including a letter to the Mayor of Ashburton, relative to delegate. Cr Kissel objected, and asked the Mayor for an explanation why the letter had not been written according to directions of the Council. The Mayor explained to the satisfaction of the Council. From tho Colonial Secretary, relative to a Bill for the management of Hospitals and Charitable Institutions, and for the distribution of Charitable Aid. To be considered. FINANCE. Some discussiou of a general nature took place relative to finance. A letter to the manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Christchurch, was remarked upon as not being answered. Iho matter was deferred to next meeting. PAYMENTS. The Clerk's salary, amounting to £8 6s Bd, was passed for payment. MOTION ON NOTICE. Or O'Reilly moved the motion standing in his name to tho effect that this Council is of opinion that the Clerk's salary and office expenditure be reduced, and that the office hours be reduced accordingly. In moving the resolution, Cr O'Reilly said that it was the cry of the ratepayers that while the Council were paying their Clerk regularly, they could not pay their other liabilities, such as the lamplighter. He mentioned the fact that the County Council had made two days a week their office days. He wished to say nothing against the present Clerk, but he moved the resolution solely on account of the present financial position of tho Council, and now proposed the resolution with the following addition—"That the Clerk's salary be reduced to £50, and the office clays be three days a week." Cr Chadwick seconded the motion. Cr Bridge would ask the Council to pause before deciding the question, and, after speaking to the motion, moved as an amendment that the Clerk's salary be reduced by £25 per annum.
The amendment was put, Crs Bridge, Bruce, and the Mayor voting for it; and for the motion—Crs O'Reilly, Chadwick, and Kissel.
The Mayor gave his casting vote in favor of the amendment, which was consequently carried.
Tho Council then adjourned
