Defendant admitted tho claim, but objected to being mulcted in costs. It appeared that defendant had given an order for the amount, which'was returned on the ground of its being uni.arm; jd. ■Judgment v, : i:a given for the amount claimed and costs. J. Sunckoii v. William Hf.-mniotid.— Claim „I_, p.'irchaso money of a hor,e. Tho defence amounted to a denial of tho purchase. . Adjourned till the oth insi., for the evidence of a brother of defendant's, to whom it was alleged he had-re-sold tho animal. Tho Court tsen _djoi;T,..,_ [\Y_ 0:0 -s xp g;vo es> no casu do wo hold rosnivisibk for iho senituiems of our correapofMouts.J conntt council. To the Editor of the Ahcrou Mail. _'n:, —I bt-vo L&ard a gr.at deal abo_t noa grand building, the- Akaroa "County Council Chambers," and too doings of tbe Councillor... Happening to bo there on Saturday last, I have octne to tho conclusion fiiat the County Council from iirst to last, is :i complete farce, ami a thing I bat, unless the ratepayers look at'ter their interests, will prove a very expensive 1 usury to them. I am told on good authority that this braiding when funmbed will cost „I_oo. A greater waste of public money could not bo perceived ;, but I suppose money was no-obj.oi to them. Why could they not have done with a building like the Akaroa and Wainui Bead Board ofiices, and which cost considerably under £200? It would be quite good enough, for my part I think too good, for all the work done since it has been in existence. One of the members told myself and others that sometimes when they met they had reaily no work to do. I can. quite believe it: for by the excitement manifested by some'of the members on Saturday, it was evidently, quite a field day with them, and an extraordinary specimen of their arduous labors. The. ratepayers may believe this, and take it to bear', that work or no work, the travelling expenses have to bo paid, and the ratepayers have to pay the piper.'
The County Council are awfully down on tbe I'kiad Boards for misuda'S made, but they themselves aro far from being immaculate-. As for example in tho case of the £50 paid to their Engineer for regrading a portion of the Summit road. It was shown by* one of tho members that the work w.as totally useless through imperfect instructions having been given, and, a_ they said, not through any fault of the Engineer. I .should like to know, Mr Editor—l think tho question has been asked before—by what right do the Council spend tbe Okain's Boad Board or any other Boad Board's money ? Let them mind their own business, allocate the funds to the various Boad Boards as they receive them (and not keep them to play with like the children do with a toy that duos not belong to tbc-ui), let the Boards have what clearly belongs to thcinsotvey. and let them use it in a judicious manner. Tho Bond Boards are Co b._;t judges of tho requirements in outlying district?;, whether it be main roads or by-roads, and they have never made, as a bod}' such glaring mistakes as the County Council have, in, for example, tho re-grading of that portion of the Summit road referred to above. I aui, yours, &c , OLD PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
