THE GRANT OF TREES TO THE BOROUGH.

-. To Jlie AJtaxoa-Mail. ■-, SiR,-r-Some two .months, ago, at the;suggestion of Cr Cullen, a resolution '■ was passed by the Council that; fifty ornamental and forest treesEshould be applied foi* from the Domain, to be planted in the towrjship and reserves under the direction of the AVorks Committee, of which Cr Cullen is a member. Fifty trees were accordingly procured, comprising oak, ash, elm, silver birch, beach, andvarieties of pine. Having learned that "none Jot these had been planted,.in the resolution, I brought tlie-- the Gouncil last night, and endeavore"d\tQ ge¥ ah explanation from the (ioihmittee. Two of its members," stated they hyd had nothing to'do with 1 " the* trees,} and knew nothing about them. I then'asaed Cr t Cullen if lie ooTtld i|tate what ; %d<peijome ' of ! that some lntdsjbeen sent.to the Hospital, and that,. astp the "restyiie could'assunfthe Councirihey had been planted and were doing well. As Cr Cullen treated the matter thus flippantly I asked him, through the Mayor, to be good enough to state what he had done with the trees, as I could produce a witness who saw him take some from the Council yard. To this I received no reply, and Cr Cullen tried to pass the matter off •as a joke. Seeing that he declined to give to the Council any account as to the disposal of the trees, I trust he will inform the ratepayers, through your columns, what he has done with the thirty-nine that are missing. I should have stated that there six trees still in tlie Council yard, and that five are planted at the Hospital, thus accounting for eleven out of the fifty. Yours, &c,

W. H. HENNING,
