COUNTY COUNCIL AND ROAD BOARDS.
To the Editor of the Akaroa Mail
Sir, —I was very much surprised to see by your last Tuesday's paper that Mr Dalglish had opposed Mr Barker's motion—to divide certain monies among the different Road Boards.
The Okain's Bay District Road Board are now indebted for work done about £300. Mr Dalglish knowß, or ought to know, being member for Le Bon's Riding, that had it not been for the great damage done here by the late floods, the Board would not be in debt to that amount at the present time.
Mr Dalglish stated at a public meeting meeting here that the County Council had not more in hand than £200 or £300, whereas I have been told by another member that the amount to their credit is about £1100. Probably James thinks that by-and-bye if the funds be low he'll no' be able to get the few bawbees for travelling expenses.
The ratepayers here are of opinion that it is a great piece of injustice to keep a lot of working men out of their money honestly earned; and that the Council ought to let the Road Board have a few hundreds to pay them off, as the Board could not help tlie damage done by the floods, but were obliged to have the repairs to roads and bridges done at once, so as to ensure the safety of the public.
If Mr Dalglish thinks fit to oppose so reasonable a request, I think the sooner his term of office expires the better for this part of the County. Yours, &c, RATEPAYER. Le Bon's Bay, Sept. 29-
