London, Sept. 8.

At the wool sales to-day 6300 bales were catalogued. The tone of the market is firmer. The barque Vincent, bound from London to Adelaide, has put back, having taken fire. The fire has been extinguished. Sir Stafford Northcote, in a speech supporting the candidature of his son for Exeter, insisted upon the maintenance of unity between England and the Colonies. He deeply deplored the massacre at Cabul, and stated that Colonel Cavagnari died nobly at bis post, and his death was a serious loss to the nation ,

Bombay, Sept. 6. The defence of the British Residency at Cabul was stubborn and attended with great loss to the attacking party of Cabulese. An unsuccessful attempt was made by the Cabulese to storm the building, but they finally fired the doorway, swarmed in, and killed the defenders. The Governor of Candahar has expressed his Idevotion to the British. Military preparations that are being rapidly pushed forward.

News from Afghanistan states that Col. Cavagnari fell gallantly defending the Residency, the staff and all the members of the household sharing the same fate. Nine sowars escaped. There is intense emotion throughout India, and a re-invasion is promptly proceeding, and it is demanded that Cabul shall be dismantled as a punishment for the massacre.
