The brigantine Meg Merrilies arrived to-day, and reports the massacre of a boat's crew from the Auckland schooner Agnes Donald at Pentecost Island. The Agnes Donald returned to Levuka from a labor cruise on August 2, and the captain reported that at Pentecost the boat's crew landed and were attacked on the beach by natives. The crew of the boat was under the charge of the mate, a young man named George Simpson, well known in Auckland, from whence he came. He fired his revolver, and wounded one of his assailants, when he was struck on the head and killed. Three natives, who comprised the crew, were literally hacked to pieces, a lad being the only one who escaped. Simpson has a wife and family in Auckland.

Captain Murphy, of the Minister of Marine, and Robert Robinson, mate, were charged with a series of acts of cruelty to Alfred Cole, A.B. All day long the Court and approaches were blocked up by the public. The evidence of Cole lasted the whole day. Nearly all the crew are witnesses,, and. the case was remanded at the request of defendant's counsel, % allow time to arrange the cross-examination.- ■ WkllYn&ton, August 12. A writ for £200 has been served upon Mr George Darrell at the instance of the proprietors of the Saturday Adve?*tiser, for an alleged libel contained in a handbill, which was recently circulated in the Theatre Royal by Mr Darrell. It is stated that Mr Darrell intends to issue a writ for £500 against the proprietors of the Advertiser, A young lady had a narrow; escape from.death last evening. When alighting from the tramway she . slipped, and, not falling free from the carriage, was dragged a distance of about 200, yards, but fortunately escaped with a few bruises.
